Las Cruces, N.M. -- New Mexico State Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston announced Friday, June 1st that Steve Macy has accepted a position with the Aggie Athletics Department as the Associate Athletic Director of Marketing & Promotions, bringing 14 years of knowledge and experience to NMSU. Macy’s starting date is scheduled for mid-July.
“We are extremely excited that Steve has accepted the offer to become our new Associate Athletics Director of Marketing & Promotions,” Boston said. “Based upon the areas of growth, especially with television and Aggie Vision, we think he will be a great fit in providing leadership in that area. Aggie Vision is a very important part of our future as well as a revenue stream, and his background in working with television and the major carriers will be invaluable long term to our department.”
Macy’s primary duties are to oversee the day-to-day operations of the NMSU Marketing Department, Aggie Vision and the NMSU Athletic Media Relations Department.
“I’m very excited to be an Aggie,” Macy said. “The energy and synergy surrounding New Mexico State is something I’m very excited, proud and humbled to be a part of. My family and I are very excited to become active members in the community and we think the city of Las Cruces will be a great place to raise our kids.”
Prior to becoming an Aggie, Macy spent a majority of his professional career fulfilling various roles at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Most recently he was the Associate Commissioner of the WAC. His duties included marketing & promotions, corporate sponsorship sales and retention, the development and implementation of the WAC’s Play Up marketing and promotions campaign, licensing, branding, corporate development, new technologies and special projects. He also managed all aspects of WAC.tv (the WAC's Internet-based content distribution system) and the conference's affairs as a part of the senior management team.
Before being promoted, Macy held the title of Assistant Commissioner from February 1999 through July 2004. His main responsibilities pertained to business affairs, the conference's annual basketball tournament, marketing & promotions, licensing, merchandising and corporate development. He coordinated the business affairs of the conference, including budgeting, payroll, revenue forecasting, investing and disbursements. He served as the WAC Basketball Tournament Director and organized the tournament at three different host sites. He also served as the WAC liaison for football and men’s basketball officials and supervisors.
Macy spent his first five years at the WAC in various marketing and promotions roles. His duties involved marketing, promoting, internet site development, licensing, merchandising, corporate development and championship administration.
Macy started his career in the field of athletic administration in 1993 as an Intern/Assistant Marketing Director for the Mid-American Conference. His main responsibilities included marketing & promotions, corporate development, the conference's basketball tournament, media relations and compliance.
He earned a B.A. in Political Science from The University of Toledo in 1992, and also received a Master's in Sport Management from Georgia Southern University in 1994. He and his wife, Rebecca, have two children, Olivia and Drew.
