Preseason All-WAC Soccer Team Announced 8/13/2007 12:00:00 AM DENVER ? The 2007 Western Athletic Conference all-WAC soccer team and Players of the Year were announced today as voted on by the eight coaches. San Jose State midfielder Nicole Irwin was named WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while defenders Lindsey Smart of Utah State and Jessica Wilcox of Nevada share the honors for WAC Preseason Defensive Co-Players of the Year. Irwin’s seven goals in seven WAC matches earned her 2006 Offensive Player of the Year honors. Including her three assists, she tallied 17 points in conference matches last season. Irwin led the WAC in points (17), points per game (2.43) and game-winning goals (3) in 2006.Smart led the Aggies to a 5-0-2 WAC record and a second-seed in the 2006 WAC Tournament. She also helped Utah State goalkeeper Ali Griffin record four shutouts. Smart and the Aggie defense only allowed three goals in their seven conference matches, earning her Freshman of the Year honors in 2006.After being named a second-team all-WAC selection in 2005, in 2006 Wilcox was one of two of the first players in Nevada program history to be named to the all-WAC first team. She anchored a backline which recorded 12 shutouts in 2006, a single-season program high, and helped the Nevada defense allow a program-low 14 goals last season. Hawai’i led the way placing four on the 11-player team. Senior defender Koren Takeyama and juniors Jessica Domingo, Taryn Fukuroku and Kori Lu earned preseason honors. Fukuroku was a first-team all-WAC selection in 2006 and Domingo and Takeyama were both second-team all-WAC members last season. Defending Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer champion Nevada placed two players on the preseason team, senior defender Jessica Wilcox and junior forward Samantha Miller. Both are two-time all-WAC selections who earned first-team honors last season. Wilcox was also tabbed as one of the preseason Defensive Co-Players of the Year. Utah State also had two players make the team with senior forward Dana Peart and sophomore defender Lindsey Smart being named to the squad. Peart was a 2006 second-team all-WAC selection and Smart was the 2006 Freshman of the Year. Fresno State received two spots on the preseason team as well, with juniors Nicole Gutierrez and Alison Sill. Gutierrez earned second-team all-WAC honors as a forward in 2006 and Sill is a two-time all-WAC selection at midfielder. San Jose State placed one player on the preseason all-WAC team.
