WAC Announces Cross Country Athletes of the Week

DENVER ? Fresno State’s Erick Garcia and Marissa McPhail have been named the Western Athletic Conference men’s and women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Sept. 10 - 16.

Garcia, a freshman from Parlier, Calif. (Parlier), led the Bulldogs to a second-place team finish at the Hornet Jamboree in Sacramento, Calif. on Sept. 15. Garcia finished the 8k course second overall and first among collegiate competitors with a time of 24:18. The Bulldog freshman maintained a sub five-minute pace (mile) throughout the race.

McPhail, a sophomore from Crotton, Md. (Arundel), won her first collegiate race, capturing the women's 5K title at the Hornet Jamboree in Sacramento on Sept 15.  McPhail won the race with a time of 18:27, nearly one minute better than her mark at last year’s meet where she placed 14th (19:25). McPhail helped the Bulldogs to a second- place finish, only one point off of first-place Nevada. McPhail ran a sub six-minute pace (mile), while beating Nevada's Christa Avena by six seconds for the victory.
                    
Other Men’s Nominees: Boise State freshman Sawyer Bosch finished fifth to lead the Broncos to a second-place finish at the West Coast Preview ... Idaho junior Diego Moreno-Guzman was seventh overall (sixth collegiate runner) at the Sundodger Invitational ... Utah State junior Seth Wold placed second at the Montana State Invitational.

Other Women’s Nominees: Hawai?i senior Chantelle Wilder posted a season-best time of 18:31 to win the 5k Chaminade Invitational ... Idaho sophomore Melissa McFaddan led the Vandals to a second-place finish with a 10th place individual finish at the Sundogger Invitational ... Nevada junior Christa Avena helped the Wolf Pack finish first with a second-place finish at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree ...New Mexico State freshman Brandi Gutierrez placed third at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational as the Aggies placed second.
