ON TAP IN THE WAC? This week the WAC hits the road, as six of eight teams compete away from home, with four squads in tournament action. Boise State travels to Missoula to take on Oregon State and host Montana in the Montana Nike Tournament. Fresno State is on the road to square off with two in-state rivals, UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount. Hawai?i also travels to the state of California to tango with Cal State Northridge before looking to knock off No. 4 UCLA. The Vandals of Idaho head to El Paso to meet UTEP and North Dakota State in the UTEP Border Shootout. Louisiana Tech is on the road to Nacogdoches to matchup with Stephen F. Austin before returning home to host Centenary. Nevada makes the trip to Sin City to square off with Iowa State and No. 11 Washington State in the Rebel Classic. San Jose State hosts in-state rival San Diego State in a mid-week match, then travels to Pocatello to face off with Idaho State and Northern Iowa at the Idaho State Tournament. Utah State is on the road to Washington, taking on Gonzaga and Eastern Washington.

 

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ? Utah State forward Dana Peart and Fresno State defender Amanda Reyes have been named the Western Athletic Conference Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Sept. 17. 

 

Peart, a senior forward from Brigham City, Utah, (Box Elder), scored two goals last week, one in the overtime win against Idaho State and one in the win against Weber State. The goal against the Bengals was her fourth this season. She now has a team-leading nine points on four goals and one assist. Peart has 14 career goals which ties for fourth on the Utah State career list with Charity Weston (2003-06). She also has 11 career assists. Peart scored her second game-winning goal of the season in the match against Idaho State. Peart was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week for her performance last week.

 

Reyes, a junior defender and native of Newhall, Calif. (W.S. Hart), anchored the Bulldog defense as Fresno State did not allow a goal in two matches. The Bulldogs picked up shutout road wins against Northern Colorado and Wyoming. Reyes helped goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel pitch two shutouts. The Bulldogs have out-scored their opponents 7-0 in their three wins this season.

 

Other offensive nominees included:  Shannon Saxton of Boise State scored one goal and one assist in the match against Eastern Washington ... Nicole Gutierrez of Fresno State had one goal and one assist in two matches, as the Bulldogs went 2-0 last week ... Taryn Fukuroku of Hawai?i tallied seven points in two matches last week ... Jennifer Hull of Idaho scored two goals for four points as the Vandals went 1-1 last week ... Miranda Montejo of Nevada scored one goal and one assist as the Wolf Pack went 1-0-1.

 

Other defensive nominees included:  Jennifer Burns of Boise State allowed four goals in two matches as the Broncos went 1-1 ... Tehane Higa of Hawai?i was part of a defense that allowed only two goal in two matches ... Kelsey Manning of Idaho led the Vandal defense, holding Portland State to just six shots on goal ... Devin Noe of Nevada helped the Wolf Pack shut out San Francisco for their first win of the season ... Ali Griffin of Utah State allowed two goals in 232.54 minutes as the Aggies went 2-1 last week.

 

TOPPING THE CHARTS ? Miranda Montejo became Nevada’s all-time leader in points (40) with her goal versus Sacramento State on Sept. 14 and increased her point total to 41 two days later with her assist versus San Francisco.  

 

HAWAI'I IN THE RANKINGS ? Hawai?i received three votes in the latest NSCAA Top 25 Poll. The Rainbow Wahine also made their third straight appearance in the Soccer Buzz West Region Poll (Sept. 17). Despite going 2-0 this past weekend, UH dropped one spot to No. 15, tied with Cal State Fullerton.

 

MARJANOVIC IN THE WIN COLUMN ? Nevada’s win over San Francisco on Sept. 16 marked the first career win for Wolf Pack interim head coach Antoinette Marjanovic.

 

Boise State Broncos (3-3, 0-0 WAC)

Boise State comes off a 3-1 win over Eastern Washington, in which the Broncos rallied to score three unanswered goals in the second half to secure a victory in their home opener ... freshman Shannon Saxton scored her seventh goal of the season, making her the highest scoring Bronco in a season in four years, dating back to 2003 when Brittany Zoellner scored nine goals ... Saxton continues to lead Boise State with 18 points on seven goals and four assists this season ... this week, the Broncos travel to Missoula to take on the Beavers of Oregon State and host school Montana in the Montana Nike Tournament.

 

Fresno State Bulldogs (3-2, 0-0 WAC)

Fresno State returns to action after shutout victories in both outings, with a 3-0 win over Northern Colorado and a 1-0 win over the Cowgirls of Wyoming ... led offensively by Nicole Gutierrez with three points on one goal and one assist, and anchored defensively by Amanda Reyes, who also scored a goal in the victory over Northern Colorado ... Reyes was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week for her weekend efforts ... Fresno State has outscored its opponents 7-0 in its three wins this season ... this week, the Bulldogs are on the road to square off with in-state rivals UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount.

 

Hawai?i Rainbow Wahine (5-0-1, 0-0 WAC)

Hawai?i is off to its best start since 1998 when the Rainbow Wahine started 6-0 ... UH comes off two home wins over Duquesne, one in which the defense held the Dukes without a shot on goal as goalkeepers Kori Lu and Nicole McClure combined for the 2-0 shutout ... the Rainbow Wahine have scored at least two goals in all six matches this season ... Hawai?i also has its highest scoring output in four years in its 5-2 over Duquesne, dating back to 2003 ... this week, the Rainbow Wahine make their first road trip of the season to the mainland, squaring off with Cal State Northridge before looking to knock off No. 4 UCLA.

 

Idaho Vandals (3-2, 0-0 WAC)

Idaho comes off its first homestand of the season 1-1, shutting out Portland State 2-0 before being edged 2-1 in overtime by Cal-State Bakersfield ... the Vandals have shutout three of their opponents this season and lead the WAC in both goals allowed (4) and goals against average (0.80) ... the Vandals are led offensively in every category by Jennifer Hull, who scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner against Portland State ... this week, the Vandals travel to El Paso, Texas to meet the Miners of UTEP and the Bison of North Dakota State in the UTEP Border Shootout.

 

Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (0-6, 0-0 WAC)

Louisiana Tech is still looking for its first victory of the season, as the winless streak stretches to 15 matches ... the Lady Techsters are led by freshmen Erika Rautio and Kiva Gresham, who have accounted for all of Louisiana Tech’s goals on the season ... the Lady Techsters’ 0-6 loss to Arkansas on Sept. 14 marked the first time Louisiana Tech had ever lost a non-conference game at Joe Aillet Stadium ... this week, the Lady Techsters are on the road to Nacogdoches, Texas to matchup with the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin before returning to Ruston to host Centenary ... Sunday's match versus Centenary begins a season-long five-game homestand.

 

Nevada Wolf Pack (1-3-1, 0-0 WAC)

Nevada comes off a 2-0 shutout victory over San Francisco in Reno, as the Wolf Pack picked up their first win of the season ... the win also marked the first career win for Nevada interim head coach Antoinette Marjanovic ... freshman goalkeeper Marie Cove recorded her first career shutout in the win over the Dons ... as a team the Wolf Pack recorded 17 points on the weekend, after registering only five total points in their first three matches of the season ... this week, Nevada makes the trip to Las Vegas to square off with the Cyclones of Iowa State and No. 11 Washington State in the Rebel Classic.

 

San Jose State Spartans (0-3-2, 0-0 WAC)

San Jose State continues non-conference play with a mid-week game at home versus San Diego State ... head coach Dave Siracusa previously was an assistant coach with the SDSU’s men’s program from 2001-03, and received his master’s degree there in 2003 ... the Spartans are still looking for their first victory of the season, after forcing a tie with Northern Arizona 0-0 in double overtime on Sept.14 ... this week, San Jose State travels to Pocatello to face off with the Bengals of Idaho State and the Panthers of Northern Iowa at the Idaho State Tournament.  

 

Utah State Aggies (3-4, 0-0 WAC)

Utah State comes off a three-match week with a 2-1 mark, with wins over two Big Sky opponents, Weber State and Idaho State ... the Aggies scored four goals and 11 points in the match against Weber State, the most since Oct. 28, 2005, when Utah State defeated Boise State, 4-0 ... led by Dana Peart who scored five points on two goals and one assist on the weekend ... Peart now tallies 14 career goals, tying her for fourth on the USU career list with Charity Weston (03-06) ... Peart was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week for her weekend efforts ... this week, Utah State travels to Washington to tango with Gonzaga and Eastern Washington.
