Utah State, Idaho, Nevada Earn WAC Wins

BOISE, Idaho - Utah State's swept past Boise State Saturday, 25-10, 25-20, 26-24.

 

Utah State, who snaps a two-match losing streak with the victory, improves to 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference and 6-12 overall. Boise State falls to 2-5 in league play and 5-12 on the season with the loss.

 

Senior Kris Hymas had a career-high 11 digs to go along with nine kills. Melissa Osterloh also had nine kills and added eight digs, while Lori Wilson notched a career-best three service aces. Freshman Emily Kortsen posted a career-high eight kills and hit .353 (8-2-17).

 

Jeanette Jenkins had 10 kills and two blocks to lead Boise State, while Sadie Maughan had seven kills and three blocks.

 

Utah State opened the match by scoring the first six points and quickly led by double-digits at 13-3 as it coasted to the 15-point win. In the first set, USU hit .370 (12-2-27) and held Boise State to a negative .031 (6-7-32) hitting percentage.

 

Boise State began the second set with back-to-back points and held an 18-15 advantage before Utah State stormed back and scored 10 of the final 12 points to go up two games to none.

 

Osterloh recorded six kills for USU in the second set and Hymas added five as the Aggies hit .276 (13-5-29) and held the Broncos to a .000 (11-11-34) hitting percentage.

 

The third and final set was back and forth as USU opened with a quick 5-1 lead before BSU scored four straight points. The Broncos eventually took a 20-18 lead only to see the Aggies score four straight points and lead, 22-20. BSU quickly tied the set at 22-all and it was later tied at 24-all before Kortsen recorded back-to-back kills to secure the USU win. Kortsen finished with four kills in the set as Utah State hit .225 (15-6-40). Boise State hit .200 (15-6-45) in the set.

 

Utah State finished the match by hitting a season-high .281 (40-13-96) and limited Boise State to a .072 (32-24-111) hitting percentage. USU also had 11 more digs (45-34) and five more service aces in the match (7-2), while BSU had 4.5 more team blocks (9.0-4.5) and one fewer service errors (5-4).

 

 

FRESNO, Calif. ? Nevada (8-9, 2-4 WAC) won its second WAC match of the season Saturday, defeating Fresno State (5-11, 2-5 WAC) by scores of 25-27, 31-29, 25-21 and 25-19 on the road.

 

The Wolf Pack, winners of their last three matches, improved to 8-9 on the season and is now 2-4 in the WAC while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

 

The Pack looked in control of the first set leading 24-19 and needed just one point to claim victory but Fresno State scored next five points to tie the set at 24-24. Nevada went on top 25-24 and again needed just one point but the Bulldogs scored the final three points to take the first set 27-25. The Pack hit .250 in the first set and FS .267.

 

There were 13 ties and seven lead changes before the Pack won the close second set 31-29.  With the scored tied a 29-29 Nevada got a kill from Sage Aune and the final point scored on a Fresno State attack error to give the Pack the victory. Nevada hit .094 in set two and FS .109.

 

Leading set three 21-20, Nevada used a 4-1 run to close out the set 25-21 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.  Kylie Harrington’s kill gave the Pack the final point of the set. Nevada hit .122 and held the Bulldogs to a .043 attack percentage.

 

In the final set, the Pack again led by one point late 18-17 and outscored the Bulldogs 7-2 down the stretch to win 25-19 to take the match 3-1. Freshman Erin Garvey’s kill off an assist from setter Sonnie Sei ended the match. Nevada recorded its best hitting set of the night at .286 and FS hit .082 in set four.

 

Harrington led Nevada with 18 kills and Aune tied her career high with 10. Harrington added 12 digs to post her team-leading sixth double-double of the season. Sei dished out 39 assists and finished with 14 digs to post her third double-double of the season.   Nicole Link (29), Allison Hernandez (15) and Lauren Kelly (12) all reached double figures in digs. Link’s match-high 29 digs were also a career high.

 

Baylee Platt posted a double-double for the Bulldogs with a match-high 22 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Brianna Clarke contributed 13 kills to the Fresno State effort. Setter Allanah Munson posted a match-high 52 assists and added 12 digs to post a double-double. Meghan Moss and Kasey van Grouw tallied 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

 

Nevada hit .173 in the match compared to .122 for the Bulldogs. The Wolf Pack won the blocking battle (14-11) and were led by Lindsay Baldwin’s eight. Kelly Leonardo topped Fresno State with seven blocks in the match.

 

 

MOSCOW, Idaho ? Idaho (12-6, 5-2) won its fifth-straight match with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15) victory over San Jose State (8-11, 4-5) at Memorial Gym Saturday.

 

Haley Larsen led Idaho with 14 kills and added 17 digs. Kelsey Yonker added 21 digs and Sarah Loney was in double figures with 11 digs. Kelsey James tallied 41 assists. Kelsey Taylor saw significant time and made good with a career-high eight kills and seven blocks.

 

Brianna Amian led the Spartans with 13 kills and eight digs. Kelly Crow recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs.

 
Emily Burke recorded 41 assists, eight digs, two kills and two service aces. Courtney Zellmer added nine digs, one assist and one ace. Kristal Tsukano led the Spartans with 17 digs in the match.

 

As a team, Idaho held San Jose State to a .072 hitting percentage. The Vandals held the advantage in digs at 71-70 and blocks at 15-5.
