FRESNO, Calif. ? Boise State fought to a five-set win over Fresno
State Thursday, 27-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-27, 15-12.
In
a flat out battle to the final point, the Bulldogs started off set one with the
lead, holding the Broncos off until the score was 13-13. From there, a back and
forth fight for each point led to a Bronco victory in the first set.
The
second set was very similar in a point-by-point battle to a 24-24 tie in which Fresno State was
able to take advantage and earn the second set win.
In
set three, the Broncos jumped out to a 17-9 lead and went on to a 25-19 win.
Set
four began much the same as set three, with the Broncos taking the lead. However,
the Bulldogs fought back from a 22-19 deficit to take a 27-25 win.
In
the final set, the match was even until the Broncos banked on a pair of Briana
Clarke errors to jump to an 8-4 lead. From there, senior Jeanette Jenkins added
a pair of kills to boost the Broncos to a 15-12 win, clinching the match.
Sadie
Maughan hit .438 with eight to go with 11 blocks. Elizabeth
Griffin recorded the Broncos’ first double-double of the season with a team-high
15 kills and 13 digs.
Fresno State was led by
Clarke, who recorded a match-high 22 kills, while Baylee Platt added 15. Setter
Allanah Munson had a match-high 54 assists, while Meghan Moss produced 24.
The
Broncos recorded 45 total kills (.187), five service aces and 57 digs while
also adding 20 team blocks to the mix. The Bulldogs had 63 kills
(.106 percentage) and 12 service aces to power their offensive efforts. They
also recorded 63 digs and nine team blocks on the night.
RENO, Nev. ? Idaho walked out of Virginia
Street Gym as winners for the first time since 1997 as the Vandals earned a 3-2
comeback victory over the Wolf Pack Thursday night.
The
Vandals (9-6, 2-2) trailed 2-1 before taking sets four and five and giving Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan her first win at Reno. Nevada (5-9, 1-4) had won the previous six
matches on its home court in the series.
Idaho took the first set 25-19 and held a
23-21 advantage late in set two before costly errors gave Nevada the 26-24 victory. The Wolf Pack
jumped to a 20-13 lead in set three before Idaho tied the score at 21-21, however the
Vandals couldn’t get over the hump and eventually fell 25-23. Idaho never trailed in a 25-20 victory in
set four and again held the lead throughout set five in a 15-10 match victory.
Haley
Larsen led the attack with 22 kills and Sarah Conwell added a season-high 17
kills. Five players reached double figures for digs, including Sarah Loney with
14, Kelsey Yonker with 12, and Larsen, Kelsey James, and Cassie Hamilton each
with 10. James also added 53 assists and Anna McKinney totaled 11 blocks,
including two solo blocks.
Kylie
Harrington led a group of four Nevada
players in double-digit kills with 16. She also had 12 digs for her fifth
double-double of the season.
Neither
team hit especially well as Idaho held the
advantage at .212 compared to .134 for Nevada.
The Vandals tallied 18.5 blocks compared to 12.0 for the Wolf Pack.
SAN JOSE, Calif. ? Senior Amber Simpson
broke the all-time total blocks record as New Mexico
State (9-7, 4-1) swept San Jose State
(7-8, 2-4) at Spartan Gym in San Jose, Calif.,
Thursday.
Simpson
recorded her 496th block in the second set which gave the Aggies a 23-18 lead after
opening the set down 7-1. Simpson finished the night with five blocks, 12 kills
and a .611 hitting percentage. Lindsey Yon had a match-high 15 kills on .407 hitting.
Set
one saw five ties and two lead changes but NMSU pulled off the win 25-23. The Aggies hit .292 as a team with Yon
leading the way with five kills to put her over 200 on the season.
After
the set was tied at 1-1 NMSU took the lead with its largest lead at 16-11, but
the Spartans came back with four straight points to pull within one. Although
SJSU tied the set at 18 on a service ace, the Aggies kept fighting. They got
three kills from Yon and five errors from the Spartans to win set one.
The
second set started with a 7-1 run by SJSU but the Aggies went on a 14-3 scoring
rally of their own to take a 15-10 lead. Simpson was dominant as she pounded
down six kills on seven attempts in the set to lead NMSU to a 25-20 victory.
The
Aggies got off to a slow start again in set three as SJSU took an early 5-0
advantage. NMSU kept fighting and eventually tied the set at 15 as kills from
Yon and junior Krista Altermatt along with a service ace from Yon. Points would
be exchanged by both teams before NMSU went 8-4 run to win 25-21. Yon had five kills and Altermatt and Simpson
added four each.
The
Spartans were led by Kelly Crow and Brianna Amian with nine kills apiece.
LOGAN, Utah ? Utah State posted a season-high 12 service aces in a
three-set win (25-18, 25-20, 25-11) over Louisiana Tech here Thursday night. Utah State
improves to 5-10 overall and 3-1 in the WAC, while Louisiana Tech falls to 2-9
on the season and 0-4 in league play with the loss.
Senior Kris Hymas came off the bench to record a match-high
10 kills. Hymas, who did not play in the first set, came off the bench to
record seven kills in the second set and three more in the third as she
finished the match with a .304 (10-3-23) hitting percentage. Rebecca Anderson
added five kills and hit .714, while Christine Morrill had a match-high 17
digs.
Samantha Crowder had five kills and three blocks to pace
Louisiana Tech.
Utah State opened the match by scoring seven
of the first eight points en route to the 25-18 win. USU hit just .074 (9-7-27)
in the first set, but limited LTU to a negative .100 (6-8-20) hitting
percentage. The Aggies also had five service aces and four service errors in
the set.
Louisiana Tech scored the first three points of the second
set and led 12-8 before USU took control with a 7-0 spurt to notch the
five-point win. The Aggies hit .149 (16-9-47) in the set and held the Lady
Techsters to a .025 (6-5-40) hitting percentage.
In the third and final set, Utah State
scored the first seven points as it coasted to the 25-11 win. USU hit a
blistering .409 (12-3-22) in the final set as compared to a .143 (7-4-21)
hitting percentage for LTU.
Utah State finished the match by hitting .188
(37-19-96) and Louisiana Tech hit .025 (19-17-81). USU also recorded 12 more
digs (41-29) and 10 more service aces in the match (12-2), while LTU had 4.5
more team blocks (5.5-1.0) and one fewer service errors (6-5).
