NEVADA’S BALDWIN EARNS WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

Nevada middle blocker Lindsay Baldwin has been named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 20-26. This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor for Baldwin.

 

Baldwin led the Wolf Pack to two consecutive home victories, averaging 5.06 points, 4.38 kills on .474 hitting, 1.00 digs and 0.88 blocks per set. In a 3-1 win over Louisiana Tech, she posted a match-high 15 kills on .385 hitting to go along with three blocks. She followed that with another match-high 20 kills on .548 hitting and four blocks. Nevada has won six of its last seven matches and sits in a tie for fourth place in the WAC standings.

 

Other nominees included: Fresno State’s Allanah Munson recorded her WAC-leading 10th double-double of the season vs. Hawai?i ... Nickie Thomas of Hawai?i hit .600 with 2.00 kills and 1.33 blocks per set ... Idaho’s Sarah Conwell hit a career-high .417 with 12 kills against Boise State ... Lindsey Yon of New Mexico State led the Aggies to a 2-0 record after averaging 4.00 kills and 4.44 points per set ... Utah State’s Rebecca Anderson hit .400 and averaged 2.44 kills and 1.33 blocks in a pair of matches.

 

Boise State Broncos (6-15, 3-8 WAC)

Boise State went 0-2 last week, falling in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 18-25, 13-15) to Utah State before being swept (22-25, 16-25, 7-25) by Idaho ... Against the Aggies, Alisha King led a group of three Broncos with 14 kills ... Lauren Hamm finished with 22 digs, her second-highest production of the season ... The Broncos have completed their regular-season road schedule and will now host six matches, including five WAC matches, through the end of the regular season ... Boise State has a 1-6 record at home this season.

 

Fresno State Bulldogs (5-14, 2-8 WAC)

Fresno State went 0-1 last week, falling in four sets (15-25, 25-19, 14-25, 12-25) at Hawai?i ... Allanah Munson recorded her WAC-leading 10th double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs ... The Bulldogs were out-blocked 11.5-1 in the loss ... The one block was Fresno State’s lowest of the season, as the Bulldogs average 1.63 blocks per set on the year.

 

Hawai?i Rainbow Wahine (17-3, 10-1 WAC)

UH went 2-0 last week, sweeping past San Jose State (25-12, 25-22, 26-24) and beating Fresno State in four sets (25-15, 19-25, 25-14, 25-12) ... Nickie Thomas hit .600 over the two matches (.714 vs. San Jose State and .538 vs. Fresno State) ... As a team, Hawai?i hit .454 vs. Fresno State, the second-highest of the season ...        In the match, all eight of the players that recorded at least one attack hit .300 or better ... Jamie Houston recorded two double-doubles on the week ? 18 kills and 12 digs vs. San Jose State and 12 kills and 11 digs vs. Fresno State.

 

Idaho Vandals (14-7, 7-3 WAC)

The Vandals went 1-0 last week, sweeping Boise State (25-22, 25-16, 25-7) to remain in third place in the conference standings ... Sarah Conwell led the Vandals with 12 kills ... She also hit a career-high .417 ... The 1,842 attendance for the Boise State match set a record for Idaho volleyball ... Idaho has won seven of its last eight matches ... The seven points allowed in the final set were the lowest points allowed in a set since rally scoring began in 2001.

 

Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (3-17, 0-10 WAC)

The Techsters went 0-3 last week, falling to McNeese State (25-27, 26-28, 20-25), Nevada (15-25, 25-14, 19-25, 22-25) and New Mexico State (13-25, 15-25, 15-25) ... KC Clayton averaged 2.50 kills and 1.00 blocks per set over the three matches ... Louisiana Tech takes another conference break for a Tuesday night match against Houston Baptist at home in the Thomas Assembly Center.

 

Nevada Wolf Pack (11-10, 6-5 WAC)

The Pack went 2-0 last week, defeating Louisiana Tech (25-15, 14-25, 25-19, 25-22) and Utah State (25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23) ... Lindsay Baldwin averaged 5.06 points, 4.38 kills on .474 hitting, 1.00 digs and 0.88 blocks in the two victories ... Nevada has won six of its last seven matches ... Head coach Devin Scruggs recorded her 200th victory, all at Nevada, in the Pack’s 3-1 win over Utah State on Saturday ... Senior Allison Hernandez needs six digs to reach 1,000 for her career and become the eighth player in school history to reach the plateau.

 

New Mexico State Aggies (15-7, 9-1 WAC)

The Aggies went undefeated last week, sweeping UTEP (25-15, 25-14, 25-15) and Louisiana Tech (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) ... Lindsey Yon led the Aggies, averaging 4.00 kills and 4.44 points per set ... In the win over Louisiana Tech, she had 16 kills on 23 attempts without committing a single error for a .696 hitting percentage, the highest single match percentage of any WAC player this year ...  The Aggies are currently on a seven-match winning streak and have won 11 of their last 12 ... NMSU is hitting .204 on the season and holding its opponents to a .133 hitting percentage.

 

San Jose State Spartans (10-13, 4-6 WAC)

The Spartans went 0-2 last week, falling to a pair of ranked teams ? No. 23 Santa Clara (25-22. 13-25, 20-25, 22-25) and No. 9 Hawai?i (12-25, 22-25, 24-26) ... Kelly Crow had 15 kills in the loss to the Broncos ... Emily Burke finished with 31 assists, eight digs and five kills ... The Rainbow Wahine out-hit San Jose State .298 to .129, more than doubled the Spartans in kills (54 to 24) and had 52 digs to SJSU’s 34 ... The Spartans won the blocking battle, 5-4.

 

Utah State Aggies (8-14, 6-5 WAC)

Utah State went 1-1 last week, defeating Boise State in five sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-13) and falling in four sets at Nevada (19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25) ... Rebecca Anderson hit .500 and recorded a career-high 15 kills to go along with six blocks in the win over Boise State ... Christine Morrill has recorded double-digit digs in 10 of her last 11 matches and in 17 matches overall ... As a team, Utah State is hitting .173 on the season as compared to a .221 hitting percentage for its opponents.

UNDEFEATED NO MORE

New Mexico State handed Hawai?i just its second WAC home defeat in the 12 years it has been in the league in front of a crowd of 6,619 Oct. 12. The Aggies held the Rainbow Wahine, which came into the match ranked in the Top 10 nationally in hitting percentage, to a .023 hitting percentage, the lowest for the program in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). Hawai?i currently sits in first place in the league standings with a 10-1 WAC record, having played one more conference match than the Aggies.

 

HAWAI?I RANKS FOURTH NATIONALLY IN KILLS, ASSISTS

In the most recent NCAA statistics (Oct. 26), the Rainbow Wahine rank fourth in the nation in kills and assists per set, with averages of 14.87 and 13.90, respectively. Hawai?i also ranks eighth in hitting percentage (.291) and 13th in won-loss percentage (.850).

 

WAC PLAYERS IN TOP 50 IN BLOCKS, KILLS

Three WAC players are currently ranked in the Top 50 nationally in blocks per set ? Amber Simpson, New Mexico State, 11th (1.45), Anna McKinney, Idaho, 15th (1.41) and Lydia Blaha, Boise State, 45th (1.19). In kills per set, three WAC players appear in the Top 50, led by Idaho’s Haley Larsen in 13th place with a 4.39 average. Jamie Houston of Hawai?i ranks 28th (4.06), while Lindsey Yon of New Mexico State is 34th (3.95).

 

WAC STAT LEADERS

In overall team stats, Hawai?i leads the conference in hitting percentage (.291), assists (13.90), kills (14.87) and service aces (1.46). Idaho is tops in blocks per set (2.86) and digs per set (15.10), while New Mexico State boasts the lowest opponent hitting percentage (.133).

 

In conference only statistics, Hawai?i currently leads the WAC in hitting percentage (.293), assists (14.06) and kills (15.11). New Mexico State is tops in blocks (3.11), opponent hitting percentage (.091) and digs (15.45), while San Jose State and Hawai?i are tied for the league-lead in service aces (1.66).

 

Individually, Idaho’s Haley Larsen leads the league in kills (4.39) and points (4.81) per set. Hawai?i’s Nickie Thomas leads the WAC in hitting percentage (.399), while teammates Dani Mafua and Amber Kaufman are tops in assists (11.32) and service aces (0.48), respectively. New Mexico State’s Amber Simpson and Krystal Torres lead the league in blocks per set (1.45) and digs per set (4.57), respectively.

 

In conference matches only, Hawai?i’s Thomas, Mafua and Aneli Cubi-Otineru are tops in hitting percentage (.385), assists (11.72) and service aces (0.47), respectively. Lindsey Yon of New Mexico State leads the conference in kills (4.42) and points (5.06), while Simpson is tops in blocking (1.55) and Torres leads the league in digs (4.81).

 

HAWAI?i TO HOST 2008 WAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

The 2008 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be hosted by Hawai?i, Nov. 20-23, at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. It marks the first time Hawai?i has hosted the WAC Volleyball Championship.
