The Western Athletic Conference announced its men’s and women’s cross country pre-championship coaches’ polls, as voted on by the nine head coaches in the league. Utah State was selected as the favorite to win both the men’s and women’s championships.
Utah State, the winner of the past three men’s WAC championships, was picked to win the men’s title. The Aggies received six first-place votes and 36 points. Fresno State captured second place with 27 points. Boise State and Idaho tied for the third spot with 25 points each. With 14 points, Louisiana Tech was voted fifth. New Mexico State (11) and San Jose State (9) followed closely behind in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
On the women’s side, Utah State was selected first with five first-place votes and 60 overall points. Nevada followed closely in second with four first-place votes for 59 points. With 49 points, 2007 women’s WAC champion Idaho was picked to finish third. Boise State received 40 points to capture the fourth spot, while Fresno State was ranked fifth with 32 points. New Mexico State was selected sixth with 30 points, followed by San Jose State in seventh with 24 points. Hawai?i (22) and Louisiana Tech (8) were picked to finish eighth and ninth, respectively.
The 2008 Western Athletic Conference cross country championships will take place at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 1.
