Idaho, NMSU, SJSU Earn WAC Sweeps Saturday

FRESNO, Calif. ? Idaho ran its winning streak to three with a sweep at Fresno State Saturday. The Vandals (10-6, 3-2) used scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-20 to earn their sixth sweep of the season. Idaho has now won nine consecutive matches in the series with Fresno State (5-10, 2-4).

 

Idaho used a 7-0 run in the first set to build a 12-6 advantage and later led by as many as 10 at 18-8. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 20-14, but the Vandals held on for the 25-20 victory.

 

Idaho again took a double-digit lead in set two at 16-6, but Fresno State made things interesting and came within 20-17 before the Vandals held on for the 25-21 victory.

 

Fresno State held the advantage in set three until Idaho moved ahead 17-16. The Vandals maintained the lead for the remainder of the match and three kills from Larsen helped seal the match with a 25-20 victory in set three.

 

As a team, Idaho hit .231 and held the Bulldogs to just .083.

 

Haley Larsen reached double-figures kills for the 15th time this season with 12 and earned her seventh double-double with 10 digs. Kelsey James finished with 34 assists, while Cassie Hamilton totaled 17 digs and Kelsey Yonker finished with 14 digs.

 

 

LOGAN, Utah ? For the second straight year, New Mexico State (10-7, 5-1) played and defeated Utah State on the date of Oct. 4. This time, NMSU swept the Aggies from Utah (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) at Dee Glen Spectrum in Logan, Utah.

 

Defensively, NMSU marked 12 team blocks compared to USU’s three.

 

Lindsey Yon tallied a match-high 20 kills and had a near double-double as she added eight digs on the evening. Kystal Torres dug up a match-high 17 balls, while she added five assists and one service ace.

 

Set one saw six ties and two lead changes but the NMSU was able to pull away with a 25-19 victory. NMSU had the lead at 8-7 but the set would be tied at 11, 14 and 15 before NMSU went on a 5-1 run.  The Aggies closed it out with kills from Yon and Simpson.

 

Set two also saw six ties but with five more team blocks by NMSU, the Aggies from the south won 25-21. NMSU fell behind at 9-8 but tied it up at nine. The Aggies from Las Cruces wouldn’t lose the lead again although the set was tied again at 16-16.  NMSU went on a 5-1 run that was headed by four kills from Yon, USU wrapped up the second set for NMSU with an attack error.

 

The third set was tied at one, six, seven, eight and 11 when USU went on a 5-0 run and took a two point lead at 13-11. When Krystal Torres got her 11th ace of the season, NMSU went up 21-18, which forced USU to take a time out.  NMSU finished the match with a kill from Yon to win 25-22.

 

 

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? San Jose State hit .336 for the match and recorded 49 kills in a three-set sweep of Louisiana Tech, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22, Saturday night.


Kelly Crow led all hitters with 17 kills and hit .630 for the match with 27 attempts and no hitting errors. She also recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 13 digs.

Kylie Miraldi hit .667 for the match with eight kills on 12 attempts and no hitting errors. Colleen Burke also had a perfect evening with eight kills on 15 attempts for a .533 hitting percentage.

In addition to the Spartans’ hitting percentage, the team also had a season-best 11 service aces. Colleen Burke led the team with five aces, including three in a row in the second set. Thao Pham added two service aces, while Crow, Courtney Zellmer, Emily Burke and Kristal Tsukano each added one ace.

 

 

RENO, Nev. ? Nevada (6-9, 2-4 WAC) snapped a five match losing skid, defeating Boise State (5-10, 2-3 WAC) at the Virginia Street Gym Saturday night by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 21-25 and 25-18.

 

Nevada jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never trailed in winning the close first set 25-21. The Pack continued their hot play in set two and did not trail for the second set in a row scoring the first three points on the way to the easy 25-16 victory. 

 

In the third set, Nevada trailed 12-5 but rallied to close within a point at 15-14 only to have the Broncos put together a 5-1 run to go on top 20-15. Nevada never threatened the rest of the way, as BSU won 25-21. The Pack hit a match low .057 in set three and BSU hit .157.

 

Set four was tied 12 times and there were five ties before the Pack won 25-18 to take the match 3-1. The final tie came at 15-15 but the Pack scored the next three points which was part of a 10-3 run to close out the set and Broncos. Nevada hit .200 and held BSU to a .083 attack percentage in the final set.

 

Nevada was led by Allison Hernandez, who posted a match- and career-high with 15 kills on the night.  She added 16 digs to post her fifth double-double of the season. Kylie Harrington contributed 12 kills as the Pack totaled 52 in the match. Sonnie Sei recorded her second double-double of the season with 40 assists and 15 digs

 

Elizabeth Griffin and Jeanette Jenkins led BSU with 10 kills each. Setter Mandy Klein dished out 38 assists on the night. Amanda Remy and Hamm topped the Broncos with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

 

The Pack hit .207 in the match and BSU .159.  The Broncos held a slim 11-10 advantage in the blocking battle.  Jenkins led BSU with five blocks while Sage Aune led Nevada with her match-high six.
