Five Teams Earn Season-Opening Wins

RUSTON, La. - Adrienne Johnson scored a career-high 22 points and Shanavia Dowdell added 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech to a 77-36 win over Central Arkansas in its season opener Friday.

Tech (1-0), which improves to 28-7 all-time in season openers, used a 14-0 run to close the first half to take a 40-21 halftime lead and then started the second half on a 21-1 run to put the game away.

Whitney Jones, playing for the first time since her Dec. 8 injury last year, added 12 points and nine rebounds while Sidney Stewart scored 11 points for Tech.

Jamye Adair was the lone Central Arkansas player in double digits with 15 points.

Tech shot 43 percent (32-of-75) from the field but only 10-of-21 from the free throw line while holding UCA to only 20 percent (11-of-55) shooting. The Lady Techsters out-rebounded the Sugar Bears 60-35.


BOISE, Idaho ? Down 11 points early in the second half, Boise State rallied to claim a 66-56 win over Seattle University in Taco Bell Arena Friday.

Tasha Harris led Boise State with a team-high 25 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. The win extended the Broncos' home win streak, sixth-longest in the nation, to 18 consecutive games.

Ja'Lara Walker added 13 points along with a team-high eight rebounds. Jamia Malone earned her first career start for Boise State and responded by recording 10 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the free-throw line.


LAS CRUCES, N.M. ? New Mexico State opened its season with a 78-55 win over UC Irvine Friday to get its 25th season-opening victory in 36 years, with 18 of those wins coming at the Pan American Center.

Danisha Corbett led all scorers with a career-high 21 points as she was 6-of-10 from the field, which included five three-pointers, also a career-high.

The NMSU bench outscored the Anteaters’ bench 22-2, which was a major factor in the difference of the game. The Aggies finished shooting 49 percent on the night compared to UCI’s 40 percent.


RENO, Nev. ? Dellena Criner scored a game-high 20 points as Nevada beat Eastern Washington 64-49 Friday night at Lawlor Events Center.

Cherlanda Franklin added 12 points for Nevada while Shavon Moore added her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Pack shot 36 percent from the floor while the Eagles shot 31 percent.

 
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
Fresno State fought off a furious second half Cal State Bakersfield rally to win its season opener 97-88 on Friday night at the Icardo Center.

The Bulldogs had five players in double figures led by Bailey Amundsen and Jaleesa Ross with 17 points apiece. Joh-Teena Filipe added 16 points, while Hayley Munro had 13 points and Marnique Arnold added 11.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Roadrunners 48-29 as Amundsen grabbed a career-best 12 while Filipe had seven. Fresno State shot 50 percent from the field and was 13-of-23 from three-point range.

 

HILO, Hawai`i ? Hawai`i opened the season Friday night with a 63-47 loss against Loyola Marymount in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo, Hawai`i.
 
The Rainbow Wahine are playing in Hilo for the first time since 1993 and are hosting a tournament there for the first time in history.

Leilani Galdones led the Rainbow Wahine with nine points and four rebounds. Keisha Kanekoa dished out five assists and had two steals.
 
The Lions out-shot Hawai?i 38 percent to 30 percent, but the Rainbow Wahine edged LMU on the boards, 44-43.

 

LUBBOCK, Texas ? Derisa Taleni and Yinka Olorunnife scored 12 points each, but the Texas Tech Lady Raiders were too much for the Idaho women’s basketball team in the season opener, as Tech won by a 90-55 score.

Idaho (0-1) shot 35 percent from the field on 22-of-63 shooting, while Texas Tech (1-0) was 33-of-62 from the field for a .532 clip. The Lady Raiders also held a 43-33 rebounding edge.

Olorunnife led the team with 12 points and nine boards, with two steals and one block, while Taleni also scored 12 and added three rebounds, two steals and one assist in 37 minutes.

The Vandals managed to hang tight and keep things interesting early on. Taleni nailed three-pointer at the 8:11 mark to bring Idaho within six at 25-19, but the Raiders ended the half on a 20-8 run and went into the half up 45-27.


LOGAN, Utah - Utah State began its 21st season with a 64-51 loss to Portland Friday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The loss was the Aggies' 11th-straight loss to start the season. Utah State's last season-opening win was a 78-59 victory over Southern Idaho on Nov. 17, 1981.

USU was led by Danyelle Snelgro, who scored 15 points, and Lydia Whitehead, who scored 12 points and added 15 rebounds for a double-double in her Aggie debut. Ana Pares was the third Aggie to score in double digits, adding 11 points.

USU out-rebounded Portland 39-36, but was hurt at the free throw line, making only 5-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Aggies were also hurt by 19 turnovers to the Pilots' 10.
