NMSU Earns Share of WAC Title, Top Seed in Tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M.  ? New Mexico State (21-7, 15-1 WAC) earned a share of the WAC title and the top seed in the upcoming WAC Tournament with a sweep (25-20, 25-15, 25-18) of San Jose State (12-16, 7-9 WAC) at the Pan American Center Saturday

This is the first WAC title for the Aggies since joining the conference in 2005 and the first time Hawai’i has not been the outright champion since 1998.
 
As a team, NMSU hit .264 and held the Spartans to a .154 hitting percentage.

Lindsey Yon led all players with 13 kills and 11 digs for her 10th double-double this season. Krystal Torres posted a match-high 16 digs.

Nia Freeman paced the Spartans with 10 kills, while Emily Burke dished out 26 assists in the loss.


RUSTON, La. - Kris Hymas recorded a career-high 16 kills to lead Utah State to a four-set win (25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17) over Louisiana Tech Saturday night. USU improves to 11-16 overall and 9-7 in the WAC with the win, while LTU falls to 4-23 on the season and 0-16 in league play with the loss.

Utah State finished the match by hitting .151 and Louisiana Tech hit .115. USU also recorded six more digs (59-53) and four more service aces (7-3) in the match, while LTU had three more team blocks (12-9).

Hymas hit a career-high .316 (16-4-38) in the match for Utah State, while Katie Astle added nine kills and three blocks, and hit .500.

KC Clayton and Natasha Kolunija each had 10 kills to lead Louisiana Tech.


MOSCOW, Idaho ? Idaho earned a sweep (25-14, 25-19, 25-22) of Fresno State Saturday in its final match of the regular season.

As a team, the Vandals hit .242 compared to .035 for Fresno State. Idaho held the advantage in blocks at 12.5-7.0, but Fresno State garnered a 44-40 margin for digs.

Haley Larsen led the Vandals with 16 kills and a .293 hitting percentage, while Kelsey James added 25 assists and two aces. Sarah Loney totaled six kills, four blocks, and three digs and Kelsey Yonker tallied 12 digs and two aces. Anna McKinney also finished with nine blocks.

Brianna Clarke and Baylee Platt led the Bulldogs with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Meghan Moss led the team with 17 digs.


BOISE, Idaho - Nevada (12-14, 7-9 WAC) snapped a five-match with a sweep of Boise State (9-18, 5-11 WAC) in its final WAC match of the season at Bronco Gym Saturday by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17.

Nevada hit .260 in the match compared to .086 for the Broncos. The Pack had eight blocks on the night and BSU three.

Lindsay Baldwin and Kylie Harrington led the Pack with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Sonnie Sei dished out a match-high 36 assists, while Allison Hernandez totaled 13 digs.

Alisha King topped BSU with eight kills, while setter Mandy Klein had 25 assists in the match.
