Fresno State and Louisiana Tech Pick Up Wins Wednesday Night

Fresno State 66, Cal State Bakersfield 51

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Paul George scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and Sylvester Seay added 15 as Fresno State defeated Cal State Bakersfield 66-51 on Wednesday night in a nonconference game.

The Bulldogs used a 14-0 scoring run to pull away in the second half, avenging a 65-64 loss to Bakersfield a year ago when the Roadrunners were in their first season at Division I.

Dwight O'Neil added nine points and five assists for Fresno State (4-4), which finished with a 20-6 edge in assists.

Trent Blakely scored 11 points for Bakersfield (3-6), and Terrence Johns added eight points off the bench.

After trailing by six points at halftime, the Roadrunners opened the second half with a Bryan Emanuel 3-pointer and a steal and dunk by Blakely to cut the deficit to 29-28.

But Fresno State responded with a 20-3 scoring run, highlighted by a 3-pointer by George and a two-handed tomahawk dunk through traffic by Brian Seals off an assist from Mychal Ladd that made the score 45-31 with 12:17 remaining.

The Bulldogs took a 23 point lead, 64-41, on O'Neil's 3-pointer with 3:41 left before Bakersfield closed the gap in the final minutes.

The Roadrunners shot just 30.6 percent from the field and finished 6 of 25 from 3-point range. Fresno State shot 44.2 percent, including 9 of 24 from beyond the arc.

George, who has emerged as the Bulldogs' leading scorer, hit 5 of 8 3-pointers after making 5 of 7 in Saturday's victory over Pacific.

Louisiana Tech 69, Louisiana Monroe 57

RUSTON, La. (AP) -- Magnum Rolle had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech past Louisiana-Monroe 69-57 on Wednesday night.

As the schools, separated by only 30 miles, renewed their rivalry after an 18-year hiatus, the Bulldogs (4-4) jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first six minutes.

The Warhawks (2-5) used a 9-2 run in the final four minutes of the half to trail 32-29 at halftime.

Louisiana Tech had a nine-point lead in the second half, but Louisiana-Monroe pulled within one point, 52-51, with just over six minutes remaining. The Warhawks then made only 2 of 12 shots to close out the game.

Kyle Gibson added 16 points for the Bulldogs and Kenneth Cooper had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Lawrence Gilbert, a Miami transfer playing in his first game for Louisiana-Monroe, scored 14 points. Malcolm Thomas added 11 and Rudy Turner had 10.
