DENVER ? Louisiana Tech first baseman Albie Goulder and Fresno State right-handed pitcher Tanner Scheppers have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 18-24.
Goulder, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz. (Cactus Shadows HS), hit .556 (5-9) in helping the Bulldogs to a three-game sweep over McNeese State last week. In the season-opening 14-5 win, Goulder had three hits, two runs, four RBI, a double, and a home run that traveled an estimated 410 feet. He then recorded a 1-for-2 performance with a home run and three runs in Louisiana Tech’s 13-1 victory the following day. Goulder finished the three-game series with five hits, two home runs, five RBI, and a stolen base.
Scheppers, a junior from Laguna Niguel, Calif. (Dana Hills HS), pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only four baserunners and striking out 10 UC Davis batters in Fresno State’s first win of the season. Scheppers was the only Fresno State starter to not allow a run in the four-game series, picking up the 7-0 shutout win.
The other hitter of the week nominations were senior outfielder Brandon Haislet, Hawai?i; senior infielder Jason Rodriquez, Nevada; junior second baseman Bryan Marquez, New Mexico State; senior outfielder Ryan Blair, Sacramento State; and junior second baseman John Shaffer, San Jose State.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were junior Jared Alexander, Hawai?i; junior Jericho Jones, Louisiana Tech; sophomore Chris Garcia, Nevada; junior Tyler Sturdevant, New Mexico State; and junior David Berner, San Jose State.
