WAC Indoor Track & Field Championship Set to Kick Off

NAMPA, IDAHO - The 2008 edition of the WAC Indoor Track & field Championship returns to Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho, Feb. 28 - Mar. 1, where four men’s teams and eight women’s teams will compete for the 2008 championship crown. The Boise State men will look to defend its 2007 title in hopes of capturing a second-consecutive and fourth-ever WAC championship, while the women’s title is up for grabs after Cal State Northridge captured the women’s crown last season.

On the men’s side, in 2007 Boise State edged out Utah State, 128 to 126. Idaho finished third with 112 points, followed by Cal State Northridge with 94 and Louisiana Tech with 65 points.

On the women’s side, in 2007 Cal State Northridge beat Louisiana Tech by a slim 2.5 points, 117.5-114. Boise State finished third with 102 points, followed by Utah State with 90.5 points. Idaho came in fifth place with 70 points, and Hawai?i was sixth with 53.4 points. Nevada took seventh with 50.5 points, followed by New Mexico State (38) and Fresno State (26).

Boise State men are led by their jumpers and throwers, with six Broncos ranked on the NCAA performance list, including Simon Wardhaugh, Ryan Grinnell, Heigo Nurmsalu, Savvas Diakonikolas, Zacharias Arnos and Jarrod Stevens. The Idaho Vandals are led by throwers Russ Winger and Matt Wauters, as Winger holds the nation’s second-best shot put and Wauters has the eighth-best weight throw in the nation. Louisiana Tech is led by junior Michael Coleman and sophomore Albert Fullwood, who earned WAC Performer of the Year and Freshman of the Year, respectively, at the 2007 WAC Outdoor Championships. The Aggies of Utah State are led by junior hurdler Nick Karren, freshman sprinter Silas Pimental and junior distance runner Seth Wold.

Boise State’s women are led by junior jumper Eleni Kafourou, who holds the nation’s 10th-best long jump and 11th-best triple jump marks and by sophomore vaulter Annelise Bertleston, who set the Bronco pole vault school record this season. Fresno State is led by junior thrower Sharon Ayala, with the nation’s 18th-best weight throw and freshman sprinter Tiera Hilliard. The Rainbow Wahine are led by seniors Annett Wichmann and Meghan Weaver and junior Emily Sheppard, who broke school records in the pentathlon, shot put and high jump, respectively. The Idaho women are led by sophomore vaulter K.C. Dahlgren, who is just the second Vandal in history to have cleared 13 feet in the event, junior hurdler Heather Bergland and sophomore thrower Mykael Bothum.

The Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters are led by their sprinting core of Lasadies McClain, Kamelia Stroy and Chasidee Lewis-Baker, and by senior thrower Nadia Alexander and sophomore jumper Latoya Collins. Nevada’s women are led by distance runners Christa Avena, Amanda Moreno and Samantha Davis, and by senior sprinter Shaina Wright. The Aggies of New Mexico State are led by sophomore sprinter Leah Benton, sophomore Jordan Veney and freshman Devin Brooks, who has already broken the Aggie school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Utah State is led by senior distance runner Amy Egan, junior thrower Krista Larson and freshman jumper and sprinter Katelyn Jensen.

Tickets: All-Session Passes (includes all sessions on Friday and Saturday) are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and youth and $10 for students. A Single-Session ticket must be purchased for events on Thursday and are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, students and youth.
