NAMPA, IDAHO ? Hawai’i’s women lead after day one of the three-day WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, earning the top two spots in the women’s pentathlon. Idaho is second with 18 points, while Utah State earned one point to finish day one in third place.

Day one of the three-day championships started with the men’s heptathlon and the women’s pentathlon. With four of the seven heptathlon events complete, Utah State senior John Strang is in the lead with 3,125 points. Boise State sophomore Heigo Nurmsalu is in second place with 2,967 points, and Idaho sophomore Mike Carpenter is in third with 2,830 points. The heptathlon’s three remaining events will take place tomorrow, Feb. 29, beginning at 11 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles.

For the women, Hawai’i earned the top two spots in the women’s heptathlon. Junior Annett Wichmann repeated as the WAC women’s pentathlon champion, taking the first women’s gold of the championship, recording 3,936 points to win the event, while senior Mallory Gilbert finished second with 3,739 points. Idaho’s Darcy Collins took third place with a score of 3,697 points.

After one women’s event in the books, Hawai’i leads with 20 points, followed closely by Idaho with 18 points. Utah State earned one point in the women’s heptathlon, to finish day one in third place.

Tomorrow’s events begin at 11 a.m. with the fifth event of the men’s heptathlon, the 60-meter hurdles. The field events begin at 4:30 p.m. and the running events start at 6:30 p.m.
