DENVER ? The Western Athletic Conference will be represented by five student athletes in the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championship on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, Mar. 20-22. A total of three swimmers and two divers earned spots in this year’s NCAA Championship.
Nevada will be represented by sophomore Margaret Doolittle and juniors Kim Kabesh and Candice Minette. Rainbow Wahine sophomore Emma Friesen will represent Hawai’i at Nationals, while senior Brie Marhenke of San Jose State will represent the Spartans.
Doolittle, the 2008 WAC Swimmer of the Year, will compete in three events at the championships. She takes to the water on Mar. 20 in the 200-yard Individual Medley, competes in the 100-yard breaststroke on Mar. 21 and finishes up in the 200-yard breaststroke on Mar. 22. Doolittle won all three events at the WAC Championships in leading the Wolf Pack to their second-consecutive conference title.
Kabesh will compete in the 100-yard butterfly on Mar. 21, followed by the 200-yard butterfly on Mar. 22. She also captured the title in both of these events at the WAC Championships in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 14-17.
Minette earned her spot in the NCAA Championships with a second place finish in the one-meter diving event at last week’s NCAA Zone E Diving Championship with a score of 529.90. She will compete in the one-meter on Mar. 20 and the three-meter event on Mar. 21.
Friesen will compete in the NCAA Championships for the second time in her two-year career at Hawai’i, finishing third in the three-meter diving event at last week’s NCAA Zone E Diving Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla., with a score of 599.20.
Marhenke will be making her second appearance at the NCAA Championships, participating in the meet for the first time in 2006. She will compete in the 50-yard freestyle on Mar. 20 and the 100-yard freestyle on Mar. 22.
