DENVER ? Boise State’s Pichittra Thongdach and New Mexico State’s Jim Brouleau have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for the week of Apr. 7-13. This is the second career Player of the Week honor for Thongdach, earning the award once already this season, and is the first career honor for Brouleau.
Thongdach, a sophomore from Petchaburi, Thailand, (Thailand) tallied two victories over ranked opponents, helping the Broncos top WAC foe No. 65 Nevada (4-3). In singles play, Thongdach upset No. 59 Maria Mizyuk of Nevada (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) at the No. 1 position. In doubles action, Thongdach paired with teammate Polina Kokoulina to take down No. 38 Caroline Bailly and Mizyuk of Nevada in a close 9-8 match.
Brouleau, a freshman from Poitiers, France, was a perfect 3-0 in both doubles and singles play, leading the Aggies to two victories. Brouleau won all three singles matches in straight sets, topping Wichita State’s Thiago Dos Santos (6-3, 6-3), Daniel Tobar of Illinois State (6-3, 7-6) and Bradley’s Vuk Bolic (6-3, 6-3). The win over Bolic was Brouleau’s fifth-straight win and his ninth out of his last 11 singles matches. In doubles action, Brouleau paired with teammate Gustave Diep to earn three victories over Wichita State’s Albert Ballesta and Dos Santos (8-4), Nunu Jacinto and Michael Hobson of Illinois State (8-2) and Bradley’s Bolic and Wilder Sampson (8-2).
Other women’s tennis nominees included: Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State was perfect in both singles and doubles with wins over WAC foe Hawai?i (7-0), No. 43 Saint Mary’s (6-1) and Loyola Marymount (6-1), tallying singles victories over No. 82 Sophie Kobuch of Hawai?i (6-4, 6-0), Saint Mary’s Alex Poorta (6-0,. 6-1) and Loyola Marymount’s Tamara Tanner (6-0, 6-1) ... Adriana Makowska of Louisiana Tech led the Lady Techsters to a 5-2 win over Grambling State, earning a win over Faith Williams (6-2, 6-2) to tally her fifth-straight and seventh singles win in her last eight matches ... Caroline Bailly of Nevada went 2-0 in singles action, topping No. 27 Denver’s Annette Aksdal, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4), and No. 41 Boise State’s Polina Kokoulina, (7-5, 6-3), and also paired with teammate Maria Mizyuk to take down No. 35 Mallory Voekler and Julia Beauregger of Denver, 8-5 ... Stepahnie Eusebe of New Mexico State won all four of her singles matches at the No. 3 position, defeating Megan Pritchard of UTEP (6-2, 6-3), UC Irvine’s Clare Fernin (6-4, 4-6, 10-3), Canna Furuta of Cal State Northridge (6-1, 6-1) and Cal State Fullerton’s Jerusha Cruz (6-1, 6-4).
Other men’s tennis nominees included: Andreas Weber of Hawai?i led the Rainbow Warriors to a victory over NAIA powerhouse Azusa Pacific (4-3), picking up a win over Patrick Kur (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 2 position ... Laurent Garcin of Nevada won both his singles and doubles matches against UC Davis, topping Henri Landes in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) and pairing with teammate Guerin Smith to beat Michael Reiser and Daniel Elefane (8-2) ... Alex Thatcher of Utah State picked up his first singles win of the season against Northern Colorado’s Andrew Buzako (6-1, 6-0) and paired with teammate Matt Braithwaite to defeat Ryan Dunn and Buzako (8-1).
