DENVER ? Fresno State outfielder Steve Detwiler and Hawai?i pitcher Matt Daly have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 14-20.
Detwiler, a sophomore from Forest Knolls, Calif. (San Rafael HS), hit .563 (9-for-16), slugging 1.000 with a .708 on-base percentage. He registered nine runs, nine hits, 11 RBI, a double, six walks, and two home runs as Fresno State went 4-1 last week. In Sunday’s win at New Mexico State, Detwiler went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, a double, and six RBI.
Daly, a junior from Yorba Linda, Calif. (Esperanza HS), went 1-0 last week in 8.2 innings of work, allowing only two hits with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Daly had two appearances without giving up a run last week. He had a no-hitter through six innings against Nevada on Sunday before giving up a hit in the top of the seventh inning. Daly held the Pack to a .074 batting average in his two appearances.
The other hitter of the week nominations: Hawai?i senior Jonathan Hee, New Mexico State senior Joseph Scaperotta, Sacramento State junior Gabe Jacobo, and San Jose State freshman Danny Stienstra.
The other pitcher of the week nominations: Fresno State junior Justin Wilson, Nevada freshman Brock Stassi, Sacramento State sophomore Trevor York, and San Jose State junior David Berner.
