Host and fourth-seeded New Mexico State defeated sixth-seeded Nevada in the second quarterfinal match of the WAC Men's Tennis Championship, 4-1. With the win the Aggies move to 13-6, while Nevada ends its season at 7-14. The Aggies started strong with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point, and made quick work of the Wolf Pack in singles to seal the win. New Mexico State will face No. 49 Fresno State in Saturday's semifinal match at 3:00 p.m.
The Aggies earned singles victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 positions, while Nevada's Laurent Garcin tallied a point for the Wolf Pack at the No. 1 spot. Roman Stoisavljevic defeated Benjamin David at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4, while Jim Brouleau beat Alex Daruty at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4. Alejandro de Mucha clinched the match for the Aggies when he topped Ausustin Myard, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 6 position.
In the final men's quarterfinal match of the day the fourth-seeded Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors defeated the fifth-seeded Idaho Vandals, 4-1, to move onto the semfinal match against first-seeded Boise State at the Aggie Tennis Center, Saturday, at 1:00 p.m.
With the win, the Rainbow Warriors improved to 6-10, while Idaho ends its season at 13-13. Hawai'i earned the doubles point after wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, and then tallied three singles victories at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Andreas Weber defeated Timothy Huynk, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3, while Jeff Fitch beat Hugh McDonald, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot. Spence Mendoza clinched the match for the Rainbow Wahine with his victory over Paulo Mirando, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, at the No. 5 position.
Women's Semifinals
The second-seeded Boise State Broncos women’s tennis team earned its third-consecutive trip to the Western Athletic Conference Championship after topping Nevada in a battle, 4-2, Friday at the Aggie Tennis Center.
With the win, the Broncos improved to 20-5, while Nevada ends its season at 9-11. Boise State earned four points in singles action after falling behind 1-0 when Nevada captured the doubles point. The No. 40 Broncos tallied wins at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 positions to secure their spot in this year's WAC Championship match. Boise State awaits the winner of the one-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs versus the fourth-seeded New Mexico State Aggies.
Boise State earned its first match in No. 1 singles when Nevada's No. 72-ranked Maria Mizyuk suffered an injury and was forced to retire to Pichittra Thongdack. Polina Kokoulina recorded the second victory for the Broncos at the No. 2 position, topping No. 116-ranked Caroline Bailly, 6-3, 6-0, while Klaudia Wlodarczyk rallied to earn the Broncos third point at No. 4 singles, defeating Florence De Vrye, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. The final point was cliinched in a tight match at No. 6 when Jana Mackova beat Ly-Huong Dinh, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
No. 40 Boise State will be seeking its first-ever WAC Championship on Saturday, Apr. 26, at 10:00 a.m. at the Aggie Tennis Center.
Top-seeded Fresno State earned its seventh-consecutive trip to the Western Athletic Conference Championship after topping host and fourth-seeded New Mexico State, 4-0, Friday at the Aggie Tennis Center.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 19-7, while New Mexico State ends its season at 12-10. No. 19 Fresno State earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, and quickly followed with three singles victories to punch their ticket to the title match. The Bulldogs tallied wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 positions and will take on second-seeded Boise State, Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at the Aggie Tennis Center.
Fresno State earned its first match in No. 1 singles when New Mexico State's Sophia Marks retired to No. 16-ranked Melanie Gloria, 6-0, 2-0, ret. No. 22-ranked Anastasia Petukhova recorded the second victory for the Bulldogs at the No. 2 position, topping Zeljka Juricek, 6-3, 6-0, while Jacqueline Haskett tallied the final point at No. 5 singles, defeating Aleksa Costa, 6-0, 6-2.
No. 19 Fresno State looks to win its seventh-straight WAC Championship on Saturday, Apr. 26, at 10:00 a.m. at the Aggie Tennis Center.
