LAS CRUCES - The final day of the 2008 edition of the WAC Tennis Championship, with the men's title match between No. 2 Fresno State and No. 4 Hawai'i at 10:00 a.m. at the Aggie Tennis Center.

Men's Finals
Hawai'i won its first-ever WAC championship with a 4-2 win over second-seeded Fresno State. The Rainbow Warriors were led by WAC Freshman of the Year Dennis Lajola, who tallied victories in both doubles and singles against the Bulldogs. Lajola paired with teammate Jeff Fith at No. 2 doubles to take down Denny Fafek and Taylor Leiby, 8-4, and also upset No. 83-ranked Rudolf Siwy at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-4.

The Rainbow Warriors earned their first-ever WAC title, with their previous best finish tied for third in both 2006 and 2007. This was the third-straight year that Fresno State fell in the championship match of the WAC Men's Tennis Championship. Hawai'i will now represent the WAC in the NCAA Tournament.

Hawai'i fell behind 1-0 after No. 49 Fresno State earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, but notched four singles victories to take home its first WAC championship. In singles action, No. 108-ranked Sascha Heinemann tallied the first win over Fresno State's Mirko Zapletal, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 position, while Lajola took down No. 83-ranked Rudolf Siwy, 7-6, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. Jeff Fitch earned the Rainbow Warrior's third point with a win over Siddharth Alapati, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, at the No. 6 position, while Spence Mendoza clinched the match and the WAC title with his final singles win over Martin Nilsson, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 5. No. 49 Fresno State tallied one singles victory over the Rainbow Warriors, as Denny Fafek took down Craig Faulk, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4.

No. 4 Hawai’i upset first-seeded and three-time reigning champion Boise State to earn its first-ever trip to the WAC championship match. The Rainbow Warriors topped the Broncos in a close 4-3 match. Second-seeded Fresno State beat host and No. 3 New Mexico State, 4-0.

The WAC Men’s Tennis Championship began on Friday, April 25 with No. 2 Fresno State defeating No. 7 Utah State, 4-0 in the first quarterfinal match of the day. In the second match of the day host and No. 3 New Mexico State stopped No. 6 Nevada, 4-1, while fourth-seeded Hawai’i beat fifth-seeded Idaho, 4-1 in the final quarterfinal match.

The Fresno State men are currently ranked No. 49 in the ITA rankings. The Bulldogs are led by junior Rudolf Siwy who is ranked No. 83. and was voted WAC Player of the Year. Hawai’i is currently ranked No. 92.

Women's Finals
Fresno State won its seventh-straight WAC Women's Tennis Title with a 4-1 win over second-seeded Boise State. The Bulldogs were led by WAC Player of the Year Melanie Gloria, who paired with teammate Tinesta Rowe as the No. 3-ranked doubles tandem, earning a win over Boise State's No. 54-ranked Pichittra Thongdach and Polina Kokoulina at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Fresno State head coach Simon Thibodeau was named WAC Coach of the Year, while Nevada's Florence De Vrye was named WAC Freshman of the Year.

This was the third-straight year that Fresno State defeated Boise State in the championship match of the WAC Women's Tennis Championship. The Bulldogs will now represent the WAC in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 19 Fresno State earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, before securing three of four singles matches to take home its seventh-consecutive WAC championship. In singles action, No. 22-ranked Anastasia Petukhova tallied the first victory over Boise State's Polina Kokoulina, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 2 position, while Renata Kucerkova defeated Bianca Jochimsen, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. Tinesta Rowe clinched the match and WAC title with her final singles win over Klaudia Wlodarczyk at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. No. 40 Boise State tallied one singles victory over the Bulldogs, as Laura Baum took down Danon Beatty, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 6.

No. 2 Boise State defeated No. 3 Nevada in the first semifinal of the women's WAC Tennis Championship, 4-2, to advance to its third-straight title match. Top-seeded Fresno State beat host and No. 4 New Mexico State, 4-0. Last year, the Bulldogs swept the Broncos in a 4-0 match to win the title.

The WAC Women's Tennis Championship began on Thursday, April 24 with No. 8 San Jose State defeating No. 9 Louisiana Tech, 4-0 in the first match of the day. In the first quarterfinal match, No. 4 New Mexico State stopped No. 5 Hawai'i by a score of 4-1. Third-seeded Nevada beat sixth-seeded Idaho, 4-0, while second-seeded Boise State beat seventh-seeded Utah State, 4-0. No. 1 Fresno State then topped No. 8 San Jose State, 4-0.

The Boise State women are currently ranked No. 19 in the ITA rankings. The Bulldogs are led by junior Melanie Gloria who is ranked No. 16, and has earned WAC Player of the Year in each of her three years. Boise State is currently ranked No. 40, while Nevada is No. 70.
