SAN JOSE, CA -- Boise State made a charge up the leaderboard, but New Mexico State remains the leader after the second round of the 47th annual Western Athletic Conference men's golf championship at the 6,853-yard, par-72 Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose, Calif. The Broncos shot the best round of the day with a 6-over 294, but are still three shots behind New Mexico State (286-302--588, +12).
Two of the top three individuals are from Boise State. Senior Troy Merritt shot a 2-under 70 today to take the lead with a two-round total of 138 (-6). Merritt, the nation's scoring leader with a 69.2 stroke average coming into the WAC championship, has won the past four tournaments he has played and six overall during the 2007-08 season. His teammate, Matt Hastings, also shot a 70 and is tied with last year's winner, Fresno State's Grant Doverspike, at 143 (-1). Monday's first round leader, New Mexico State's Josh Stewart, dropped to fourth place after a 5-over 77 on Tuesday. The Aggies have four golfers in the top 10 led by Stewart, Kevin Lozares (5th-146), Travis Reid (T7th-149) and Matt Edwards (T9th-150).
Nevada's Scott Smith is in sixth place with a 3-over 147 after posting a 74 today. The freshman opened the second round with a birdie and then aced the 157-yard second hole before a double-bogey on the third followed by a bogey on the fourth. He then birdied the par-4 fifth before recording his first par of the day on the sixth hole.
On the team leaderboard, Boise State is in second place after a two-round total of 591. Fresno State (601) is third followed by Louisiana Tech (613). Nevada and host San Jose State are tied for fifth at 615 followed by Idaho (621), Utah State (627) and Hawai?i (633).
The three-day tournament concludes on Wednesday with final-round tee times beginning at 7:00 a.m.
