WAC Tennis Players of the Week Announced

DENVER ? Fresno State’s Melanie Gloria and Rudolf Siwy have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for the week of Mar. 31 ? Apr. 6. This is the fifth career Player of the Week honor for Gloria, earning the award twice as a freshman, once as a sophomore and once already this season as a junior. This is the third career Player of the Week honor for Siwy, earning the award once as a sophomore and once already this season as a junior.

Gloria, a junior from Montreal, Canada, (Georges-Vanier), was a perfect 2-0 in singles action, helping the Bulldogs earn a victory over WAC foe No. 65 Nevada (6-1). In singles play, No. 14 Gloria topped No. 59 Maria Mizyuk of Nevada (6-2, 6-0) and also took down No. 77 Sylvia Kosakowski of No. 26 Pepperdine (6-1, 6-4), both at the No. 1 position. In doubles action, Gloria paired with teammate Tinesta Rowe, as the No. 4 duo defeated No. 58 Caroline Bailly and Mizyuk of Nevada in a close 9-8 (5) match. 

Siwy, a junior from Trinec, Czech Republic, (Gymnazium Trinec), proved that he is a force to be reckoned with, taking down the No. 6-ranked Andre Begemann of No. 13 Pepperdine (2-6, 6-3, 6-2). Siwy also defeated Philip Therp of UC Santa Barbara (6-4, 7-6) in the Bulldogs win over the Gauchos (4-3). He also paired with teammate Mirko Zapletal to top UC Santa Barbara’s Jack Hui and Therp (8-6) at the No. 1 doubles position. Siwy is now 24-7 overall and 17-3 in dual matches this season.

Other women’s tennis nominees included:  Klaudia Wlodarczyk of Boise State was perfect in both singles and doubles in wins over Portland State (6-1) and WAC foe Utah State (7-0), tallying singles victories over Portland State’s Stephanie Fuchs (6-3, 6-2) and Hailey Swenson of Utah State (6-2, 6-1), both at the No. 2 position ... Adriana Makowska of Louisiana Tech led the Lady Techsters with two singles victories, tallying wins over Lola Pardo of Harding (6-2, 3-6, 10-8) and Heidi Miller of Central Arkansas (6-4, 7-5), earning her sixth singles win in her last seven matches.

Other men’s tennis nominees included:  Clancy Shields of Boise State aided the Broncos to victories over Idaho (6-1), No. 61 San Diego (6-1), going undefeated in both singles and doubles action, earning wins over Stanislav Glukhov of Idaho (6-2, 5-7, 6-4), and San Diego’s Dean Jackson (6-3, 6-4), both at the No. 2 position... Andreas Weber of Hawai?i led the Rainbow Warriors to an upset victory over No. 66 UC Irvine (5-2), picking up wins over Juan Gomez of No. 48 San Diego State, 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Trevor Dobson of UC Irvine, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, both at the No. 3 position ... Jonas Tyden of Utah State led the Aggies to a victory over Idaho State (5-2), topping Alex Buceta (6-0, 6-3) at the No. 4 singles position, and teaming with Jakob Asplund at No. 1 doubles to defeat Marc Pijoan and Javier Royo (8-5).
