Seven Earn Academic Softball Honors

The Western Athletic Conference had seven softball players named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI and VIII team announced by CoSIDA on Thursday afternoon.

Hawai`i Clare Warwick was named to the District 8 first team, while junior Julie Franklin and senior Brandi Peiler were named to the second team. Warwick, a third baseman from Australia, carries a 3.91 grade point average and is majoring in Pre-Kinesiology and Leisure Sciences. Warwick has started every game for the Rainbow Wahine and was named Second Team all-WAC. Last season, Warwick earned NFCA and Easton All-America honors and was also CoSIDA all-Academic last year as well.

Franklin, an infielder from Temple City, Calif. carries a 3.95 grade point average and is majoring in Psychology. Franklin is also a UH Scholar-Athlete and carries the highest GPA on the team.

Peiler, an leftfielder from Mililani, carries a 3.59 grade point average and is majoring in Family Resources. Peiler is second on the team with a .349 batting average and was named Second Team All-WAC for the second straight year.

Fresno State's Haley Perkins and Aja Scheuber were named to the District 8 All-Academic team. Perkins was one of four infielders selected to the first team and Scheuber was the only designated player.

Perkins, a junior third baseman from Fresno, Calif., has a 3.55 GPA in Kinesiology. This is her second District 8 honor as she was named to the second team last season. She is also a 2007 WAC Scholar-Athlete, two-time Academic all-WAC member, a two-time Fresno State scholar athlete and a two-time member of the Dean's list.

Scheuber has a 3.29 GPA in sociology. The senior from Turlock, Calif., was a 2007 NFCA Scholar-Athlete, a 2007 Academic all-WAC member, a 2007 WAC Scholar-Athlete and a 2007 Fresno State Scholar

New Mexico State junior right-handed pitchers Kim Watson and Samantha Dillard were named to the second Team in District VI. This is the second consecutive year that Watson has received this honor, but marks the first for Dillard.

Watson has received several other academic honors throughout her career as an Aggie and currently holds a 3.85 Grade Point Average in marketing. Besides earning this award last season, she also been selected to both the 2007 and 2006 Academic All-WAC Teams and was a 2006 NFCA Scholar Athlete. Watson has appeared 42 times in the circle this season, while making 32 starts.  Her overall record sits at 17-18 on the season and is an even 4-4 in conference play.  Watson has sat down 178 batters and has had three shutouts, while maintaining an ERA of 2.66 in 200 innings of action.

Dillard is currently pursuing her Masters in English and has maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.71 throughout her entire colligate career.  She was also a 2007 Academic all-WAC selection. In the circle Dillard has recorded an overall record of 4-10, while making 26 appearances and 13 starts.  Her ERA sits at 2.84 and has fanned 48 in 86.1 innings of work.  Dillard leads the team in the WAC with an ERA of 2.33 as she has appeared in seven games and started three of those.
