Boise State, Hawai'i End Seasons with 1st Round Losses in NCAA Tournament

2008 Men's Tennis Championships Bracket

LOS ANGELES ? The No. 36-ranked Boise State Broncos ended their season with a tough 4-2 loss to the University of California in the First Round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at Marks Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern California. Boise State ends its season at 21-12, while Cal improves to 13-10 and advances to the Second Round of the NCAA tournament to face No. 6-seeded USC (20-4).

Cal captured the doubles point to get off to an early lead, holding off two Bronco comeback attempts at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Boise State's No. 29-ranked tandem of Luke and Clancy Shields upended Cal's Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot, but the Broncos could not pull wins at either No. 2 or No. 3 doubles. Cal's Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov took down Piotr Dilaj and Steve Robertson, 8-5, at the No. 3 position, while Eoin Heavey and Kallim Stewart defeated Paul Koenke and Eric Roberson, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles.

Heavey gave Cal a quick 2-0 lead at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Brent Werbeck, though moments later, No. 97-ranked Luke Shields got Boise State on the board with a 6-4, 6-2, win over No. 110-ranked Stewart at the No. 1 position.

The Bears extended their lead to 3-1 as Zerbini defeated Dilaj, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, but the Broncos responded minutes later as No. 83-ranked Clancy Shields mimicked his brother to defeat Mouillon, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and get Boise to within 3-2.

Cal’s Katsarov appeared on his way to a straight-set win at No. 6 singles to close out the match for the Bears, leading 7-6, 3-0, over Boise State’s Koenke, but Koenke came back to rattle off six consecutive games to even the set. Katsarov, however, found a way to reverse the momentum and blanked Koenke in the final set to clinch his match and the win for Cal.

MALIBU ? In their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the No. 63-ranked Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors ended their season with a tough 4-0 loss to Pepperdine University in the First Round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at Ralph-Straus Tennis Center on the campus of the Pepperdine University. Hawai'i ends its season at 8-11, while Pepperdine improves to 19-6 and advances to the Second Round of the NCAA tournament to face Stanford.

The Rainbow Warriors put up an excellent fight, but could not match the depth of the Waves, who picked up their 16th straight win. In doubles action, Hawai'i got off to a quick start at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, but could not hold off the Pepperdine doubles tandems. Sascha Heinemann and Andreas Weber held a 4-2 lead over No. 24 Andre Begemann and Omar Beidas, before the Waves duo took six of the last seven games to win, 8-5. The Waves clinched the doubles point when James Lemke and Mahmoud Kamel defeated Craig Faulk and Spence Mendoza on the No. 3 court, 8-3. Jeff Fitch and Dennis Lajola led for most of their doubles match with Bassam Beidas and Johannes de Villiers before it ended, 8-8.

The Waves took the remaining points at the No. 4, 5 and 6 courts in singles competition. Kamel defeated Fitch, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position and Lemke dispatched Mendoza, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Brian Brogan clinched the Pepperdine win with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Faulk at the No. 6 court.

The top portion of the order proved much more competitive, but all three contests went unfinished with the match already decided. No. 98 Heinemann led No. 37 Bassam Beidas 6-4, 2-0 at the No. 2 court and Weber led the first set tie-breaker over Omar Altmann at the No. 3 court. Lajola was giving Begemann, ranked No. 11 in the country, all he could handle at the No. 1 court. Begemann was leading 6-4, 2-0, before the match was called.

No. 13 Pepperdine def. No. 63 Hawai'i, 4-0
