BOISE, IDAHO - The 2008 edition of the WAC Outdoor Track field Championship returns to Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho, May 14-17, where five men's teams and eight women's teams will compete for the 2008 championship crown. The Utah State men will look to defend its 2007 title in hopes of capturing a second-consecutive WAC championship, while the Louisiana Tech women hope to capture its fourth-straight title.
On the men’s side, in 2007 Utah State won its first-ever WAC Outdoor Track and Field title with 183 points, followed by Boise State in second with 141 points. Louisiana Tech finished third with 117 points, followed by Fresno State with 102 and Idaho with 100 points.
On the women’s side, in 2007 Louisiana Tech won its third-consecutive WAC Outdoor Track and Field title with 162 points, followed by Nevada in second with 123 and Idaho in third with 121 points. Boise State finished fourth with 116.5 points, followed by Utah State with 97.5 points. Hawai'i came in sixth place with 97 points, Fresno State was seventh with 82 points and New Mexico State finished eighth with 20 points.
Boise State's men are led by their jumpers and throwers, with five Broncos ranked on the NCAA performance top-25 list, including Simon Wardhaugh, Ryan Grinnell, Jarrod Stevens, Savvas Diakonikolas and Zacharias Arnos. Fresno State is led by freshman Gary Lee, who holds the nation's 19th-best long jump and senior Brian Vazquez with the 27th-best hammer throw. The Idaho Vandals are led by thrower Russ Winger and jumper Elvie Williams, as Winger holds the nation’s best shot put and eighth-best discus throw and Williams has the sixth-best long jump in the nation.
Louisiana Tech is led by junior Michael Coleman and sophomore Albert Fullwood, who earned WAC Outstanding Performer of the Year and Freshman of the Year, respectively, at the 2007 WAC Outdoor Championships. The Aggies of Utah State are led by junior decathlate John Strang, junior hurdler Nick Karren, junior jumper Blake Hadfield and sophomore distance runner Steve Strickland.
Boise State’s women are led by junior jumper Eleni Kafourou, who holds the nation’s fourth-best long jump and 23rd-best triple jump marks. Fresno State is led by junior thrower Sharon Ayala, with the nation’s 15th-best hammer throw and freshman vaulter Brooke Pighin, with the nation's 24th-best pole vault. The Rainbow Wahine are led by seniors Annett Wichmann and Meghan Weaver, who broke school records in the heptathlon and shot put, respectively. The Idaho women are led by senior vaulter Melinda Owen, who holds the nation's best pole vault, junior hurdler Heather Bergland and sophomore thrower Mykael Bothum.
The Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters are led by their sprinting core of Kamelia Stroy, Chasidee Lewis-Baker and El Charrita Reynolds and by senior thrower Nadia Alexander, who holds the nation's 23rd-best shot put. Nevada’s women are led by senior thrower Inger Appanaitis, who earned NCAA Regional qualifying marks in three events, including the javelin, hammer throw and discus. The Aggies of New Mexico State are led by throwers Jordan Veney and Randi Grimes and freshman hurdler Devin Brooks, who has already broken the Aggie school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Utah State is led by senior distance runner Amy Egan, junior thrower Krista Larson, junior hurdler Katie Thatcher and senior distance runner Stacie Lifferth-Dorius.
