BOISE, IDAHO - With the men's decathlon and women's hepathlon multi-events in the books, Fresno State's men and Idaho's women are in the lead after day two of the four-day WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. For the men, Fresno State leads with 14 points, followed closely by Utah State with 11 points and Boise State with six points. For the women, Idaho is on top with 22.5 points, followed by Hawai'i in second with 12 points. New Mexico State holds third place with 3.5 points and Utah State is in fourth place with 1 point.
Today's events started with the conclusion of the men’s decathlon and the women's heptathlon. After completing five of the ten decathlon events on Wednesday, May 14, Utah State junior John Strang was leading with 3,867 points. Strang held on to capture the decathlon title, winning five of the ten events to tally a final score of 7,083 points, earning his second-straight WAC decathlon title. Fresno State freshman David Deal finished second with a total of 6,481 points, moving up one position from yesterday's third-place finish after the first five events. Boise State's Eric Demers finished third with 6,436 points.
On the women's side, Hawai'i senior and two-time defending WAC heptatlon champion Annett Wichmann, held onto her day one lead to win the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 5,266 points. Wichmann becomes the first female in WAC history to win three consecutive hepathlon titles. Idaho locked up the second, third, fourth and fifth places in the event, with sophomore Darcy Collins in second with 4,951 points and senior Molly Burt in third with 4,842 points.
Tomorrow’s field events begin at 12:30 p.m. with the men's hammer throw, with the track events starting at 2:00 p.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
