2008 NCAA Men's Doubles Bracket
DENVER ? Boise State junior Clancy Shields won his opening-round match over the Oklahoma’s No. 30-ranked Andrei Daescu in a three-set battle at the NCAA Tennis Men’s Singles Tournament, Wednesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. After dropping the first set 5-7, Shields rallied to claim a dominating 6-2 win in the second set, forcing a decisive third set. Shields held off Daescu 7-5 in the final set to claim the match victory and the right to advance into Thursday's second round action.
The victory improves No. 83-ranked Shields to 26-14 overall on the year, while Daescu ends his season at 28-12. Shields will face defending national champion and the current No. 1-ranked Somdev Devvarman of Virginia in Thursday's Round of 32, at 10:00 a.m. The Cavalier defeated Vanderbilt's Ryan Preston (6-1, 6-3) in his first round match, extending his unbeaten streak to 30 consecutive matches, tying a NCAA Tournament record in the process. The victory by Devvarman was his 13th-career NCAA Singles Tournament win, tying the record for the most wins in a career since the NCAA split the team and individual tournaments in 1977. Devvarman owns a near-perfect 38-1 overall record on the year, going a perfect 24-0 during the spring dual match season.
In addition to Shields singles match against Devvarman on Thursday, he will also team up with his brother Luke for their first doubles match of the tournament. Shields and teammate Luke Shields are currently ranked No. 29 in ITA doubles after notching a record of 15-3 as the Broncos’ No. 1 doubles tandem. This is the fourth-straight year that Luke Shields has participated in the NCAA men’s doubles championships, earning All-American status in 2005 in both singles and doubles by reaching the Round of 16 in each bracket. Shields and Shields will open up doubles action against Georgia’s No. 17-ranked Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg on Thursday, May 22. Hunt and Schnugg put together a 28-12 record at the No. 1 doubles position for the Bulldogs.
