TULSA ? The Fresno State Bulldogs continued their success at the 2008 NCAA Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, tallying three wins at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Both Bulldog doubles tandems notched opening round victories, earning the right to advance into Friday's Round of 16 action, while junior Melanie Gloria tacked on her second win in singles action, also moving onto Friday's Round of 16 in singles play.
No. 16-ranked Gloria advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Tennis Women's Singles Championship after UCLA's No. 54-ranked Andrea Remynse retired due to injury. Remynse bowed out after Gloria took a 4-3 lead in the first set, giving the Bulldog her second-consecutive Sweet 16 appearance in singles play. The victory improves Gloria to 29-8 overall on the year, while Remynse ends her season at 38-10. Gloria will now face Baylor's No. 25-ranked Zuzana Zemenova, Friday, May 23, at 11:00 a.m., in Round of 16 action. The Bear defeated Georgia's No. 58-ranked Kelley Hyndman (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) in her second round match, extending her record to 36-5 on the season.
In addition to Gloria's singles match victory over Remynse, the No. 2 doubles pair of Gloria and Tinesta Rowe earned an opening round win over North Carolina's No. 15-ranked Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand (6-3, 5-7, 6-4). This is the duo's first win in the doubles tournament after last season's opening round loss to Tennessee's No. 1 tandem. Gloria and Rowe (34-8) will now take on Arkansas's No. 29-ranked Ela Kaluder and Aurelija Miseviciute on Friday, May 23, at 5:00 p.m. Kaluder and Miseviciute earned a first-round victory over Pennsylvania's No. 36-ranked Julia Koulbitskaya and Kate Kosminskaya (6-4, 6-2), marking the duo's 30th win of the season.
The Bulldogs doubles pair of Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova also tallied an upset victory over Florida's No. 8-ranked duo of Megan Alexander and Marrit Boonstra, taking down the Gators in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). The No. 33-ranked tandem of Petukhova and Kucerkova (42-7) will face Auburn's No. 14-ranked Alex Haney and Melissa Koning on Friday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m. Haney and Koning earned a first-round victory over Utah's No. 25-ranked Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3.
