#10 Hawai?i 3, #9 Washington 2
Coming back from a
2-0 deficit, No. 10 Hawai`i beat No. 9 Washington 20-25, 27-29, 26-24, 25-14 and 16-14 in
front of a crowd of 7,325 to win the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the
Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.
Jamie
Houston led the way with 27 kills while Kanani
Herring had her fourth double-double with 21 kills, 16 digs and four
blocks. Amber Kaufman broke the school record with 11 service aces,
adding 10 kills, six digs and two blocks. Stephanie Ferrell came off
the bench to post nine kills, while Aneli Cubi-Otineru and Tara
Hittle chimed in 17 and 12 digs in the back row, respectively. Dani
Mafua set the UH attack with 63 assists and seven digs.
Washington used
an early 5-1 run to take a 7-3 lead early in the first set. A block by Kaufman
and Cubi-Otineru and a Houston
kill pulled UH back within a point at 9-8. But Jill Collymore served UW on a
4-0 run to push its lead to 13-8. The Husky lead got up to 15-9 and 21-16
before UH started to mount a comeback. Kaufman put away a big kill before
stepping behind the service line and serving the Rainbow Wahine to get within
two at 21-19. After trading sideouts, UW put it away 25-20, taking the final
point of the set on a let serve that fell on UH’s side of the court.
Hawai`i
started the second set hot, jumping out to an early 13-8 lead. But Washington answered back
on the serve of Tamari Miyashiro. Miyashiro served UW on a 6-0 run that gave Washington the lead at
14-13. The Huskies got their lead to 22-18 before Kaufman served three-straight
points to pull within a point at 22-21. A Kindra Carlson kill gave UW set point
at 24-22. But Herring but away a kill, then two blocks, to give Hawai`i their own set
point at 25-24. Carlson put away another kill before a kill by Airial Salvo put
UW ahead 26-25. The Rainbow Wahine held off two more set points before Washington put it away
29-27.
UH started its
comeback in the third. After giving up the first two points, Kaufman served the
Rainbow Wahine on a 5-0 run that included two aces, forcing an early timeout by
Washington.
UW would battle back, tying it at 8-8, then taking the lead back at 11-10. From
then on, neither team could pull away. The teams would be tied at every point
from eight to 24, giving the lead back-and-forth the whole way. Ferrell put
away a kill before Houston
bounced the last two kills to give UH the 26-24 win in the third set.
The Rainbow Wahine
kept that momentum going in the fourth set. After Washington kept it close early on, Kaufman
served a 5-0 run to put UH ahead 13-7. By the time it got around to her serve
again, Kaufman served another big run, of 6-0, ending the set with her 10th ace
of the night, taking the set 25-14.
The fifth set was
another tight one. Stephanie Brandt came in to serve a four-point UH
run that put them ahead 7-5. But Washington
came right back, scoring three in a row to hold an 8-7 edge at the change over.
The Huskies battle back, scoring three-straight on Miyashiro’s serve to put
them ahead 12-10. UW kept that two-point edge at 13-11 before another big 3-0
run by Hawai`i,
again on Kaufman’s serve, gave UH match point at 14-13. A kill by Salvo kill
held off one match point. But Houston
had another kill to get the Rainbow Wahine another match point at 15-14.
Herring then put it away for good, bouncing a ball down the line to end the
match at 16-14.
Idaho 3, Portland State
2
Idaho rallied to earn a 3-2 victory over Portland State in the final match of the Portland
State Volleyball Showcase Saturday, ending the Vikings’ 20-match home winning
streak dating back to 2006.
The
Vandals took the first set 25-17 before dropping the next two 18-25 and 17-25. Idaho then pulled out a
25-22 victory in set four and survived two match points from the Vikings before
taking the final set 17-15.
Anna
McKinney set a school record with 13 block assists, besting the previous best
of 12 held by two players. No previous Vandal had bested 10 block assists in a
match since 2001. She also nine kills.
Haley
Larsen led the Idaho
offense with 24 kills and added nine digs. Sarah Loney earned a double-double
with 15 kills and 15 digs, as did Kelsey James, who totaled 54 assists and 14
digs. Kelsey Yonker finished with 24 digs and three service aces while Cassie

to move ahead 11-8. The Vikings then scored three-straight points to tie the
score at 11, but Idaho
moved ahead by two on back-to-back kills by Haley Larsen. The Vikings used a
3-0 run to take it to match point at 14-13, but Larsen tied the score with
another kill. She committed an attack error to give PSU the lead back and again
send it to match point. The Vandals got the final three points of the set,
however, and Loney put the match away with a kill.
New Mexico State
3, UC Santa Barbara
1
New Mexico State defeated UC Santa
Barbara 3-1 in its final match of the Stanford Tournament Saturday.
The
Aggies won 25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 with three players getting double-digit
kills on the evening. Senior Lindsey Yon
had 18 kills, senior Amber Simpson had 11 kills and junior Krista Altermatt had
a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.
The
Aggies out-blocked UCSB 10-3 and out-hit the Gouchos .227 to .090 on the match.
Simpson led the way defensively with six block assists, while senior libero
Krystal Torres had 25 digs. Torres also added two service aces, while NMSU had
eight as a team.
Set
No. 1 was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before the Aggies took off and went on a 6-0
scoring run with Simpson leading the way with a kill and two service aces. Although UCSB kept up the fight, the Aggies
were too much with Yon coming up with a set-high five kills. NMSU hit the ball efficiently with a .267
attack percentage, while the Gouchos couldn’t even come up with a positive
hitting percentage.
The
Aggies picked up where they left off and took an early 3-0 lead in the second
set, but UCSB went on a 4-1 run to tie it up at 4-4. The two teams would tie the set at five and
six before the Gouchos went on a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead. Down 16-12, the Aggies showed heart and
fought back winning four consecutive points to tie the set at 16 with the fourth
point on that run coming from an Altermatt kill, her eighth of the match. Each team would exchange points at 17 and 18,
when UCSB took went up by two at 21-19.
A kill by Yon, her eighth, and a kill by Simpson tied it up for the
seventh time. After the Gouchos took
another brief lead at 22-21, Simpson tied it at 22-22 with a monsterous kill in
the middle. NMSU won four straight
points from there, which was topped off by a Simpson ace, to win 25-22.
Set
three was tied seven times up to 9-9 when UCSB got some momentum and took a
13-9 lead. That momentum was somewhat
broken when Yon got her 12th kill of the match and the Aggies took
advantage of that to go on a 5-1 run tying the set up 14-14. The Gouchos got their momentum right back and
went on a 5-0 run of their own forcing NMSU to call a timeout to regroup. The Aggies tried to put a comeback together
and tied it up at 23-23 but failed to do so and dropped the set 25-23. For the first time in the match, NMSU was
out-hit by the Gouchos .125 to .114 with the Aggies committing seven errors on
35 attacks.
After the
Aggies fell behind 4-2, they went on a 8-1 rally to take a 10-5 lead. It seemed like UCSB was making a comeback but
the Aggies kept fighting with Alyssa Gintant getting a kill to put her team up
16-12. NMSU didn’t look back and hit an
outstanding .345 hitting percentage in set four to pick up a dominant victory,
25-18.
