WAC CROSS COUNTRY NOTES

 

louisiana tech’s dinnel AND new mexico state’s flores NAMED CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Louisiana Tech’s Kinsey Dinnel and New Mexico State’s Ingrid Flores have been named the Western Athletic Conference men and women’s Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Sept. 8-14.

 

Dinnel, a senior from Loranger, La. (St. Thomas Aquinas HS), was the top finisher at the Mook 4 Invitational in Ruston this past week. Dinnel finished the four-mile race with a time of 20:30, helping the Bulldogs to a triple dual sweep.

 

Flores, a junior from El Paso, Texas (Jefferson HS), placed second at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational in Santa Teresa, N.M. Flores finished the 4700-meter course with a time of 16:59.91. It marks the second week in a row that Flores has led the Aggies across the finish line.

 

Other Men’s Nominees: New Mexico State’s Michael Hart placed eighth at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational with a 6800-meter time of 22:16.14.

 

Other Women’s Nominees: Nevada’s Christa Avena finished fifth with a 4K time of 17:54 at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree.

 

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2008 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Las Cruces, New Mexico. This year’s championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 1 at the New Mexico State Golf Course. Utah State won last year’s men’s championship, while Idaho took the title on the women’s side.

NCAA REGIONALS

The 2008 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country, Saturday, Nov. 15. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Stanford, Calif. (Stanford University). The Mountain Region will be held in For Collins, Colo. (Colorado State University), while Louisiana Tech will be the lone team in the South Central Regional (Baylor) in Waco, Texas.

TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

 

Boise State Broncos

The Broncos did not compete last week but will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Portland WCC Preview in Portland, Oregon ... the team will also compete at the Bob Firman Invitational in Eagle, Idaho on Saturday.

 

Fresno State Bulldogs

Fresno State had last week off ... the team returns to the course this Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif.

 

Hawai?i Rainbow Wahine

After taking last week off, Hawai?i returns to action on Saturday, competing in the Big Wave Invitational at the kane’ohe Klipper Golf Course.

 

Idaho Vandals  

Idaho also had a break last week ... the Vandals return to the course this Saturday as the team will compete in the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Washington.

 

Louisiana Tech

The inclement weather held off Saturday morning at Lincoln Parish Park and allowed the Bulldogs to sweep the triple dual meet thanks in part to a first place finish by senior Kinsey Dinnel ... the Bulldogs topped the triple dualing with wins of 15-40 over Centenary, 20-35 over Grambling State and 22-33 over UAPB ... Dinnel finished with the top overall time at 20 minutes, 30 seconds ... on the women’s side, the Techsters took a win over Louisiana College 19-36, while losing 40-15 to Centenary and 39-16 to Grambling. Sophomore Morgan Owen was Tech’s highest finisher at 18:21 ... the team returns to action Saturday, Sept. 20, for a run at Arkansas-Little Rock.

 

Nevada Wolf Pack

Nevada placed fourth out of seven teams at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree Saturday morning despite not running five of its top seven runners ... for the second consecutive meet, Christa Avena was the Pack’s first finisher ... she placed fifth overall in the 4K race with a time of 17:54 ? a 35 second improvement over her time at this meet last season.  Chelsea Chauvet-Moore finished 16th overall with a time of 18:23, nearly a minute faster than her time at last year’s meet (19:20) ... Nevada will travel to Minnesota for the 6K Roy Griak Invite hosted by the University of Minnesota on September 27.

 

New Mexico State Aggies

For the second week in a row, junior distance standout Ingrid Flores led the New Mexico State women’s cross country team across the finish line, Friday, Sept. 12 at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational, in Santa Teresa, N.M ... Flores brought home the silver medal overall in a time of 16:59.91, while sophomore distance specialist Michael Hart led the way for the men, crossing the line in eighth place in a time of 22:16.14 ... NMSU is back in action, Saturday, Sept. 20, as they host the Aggies’ annual Kachina Classic at the NMSU golf course.

 

San Jose State Spartans  

 The team competed in their second meet of the season at the Mike Rose Soccer Stadium on Saturday ... the men’s team finished in eighth place of a 29 team field in the men’s 8K race at the 6th Annual Brooks Memphis Twilight Cross Country Classic, the largest night-time cross country meet East of the Mississippi River ... Spartan junior David Haefele clocked the team’s fastest time for the men and placed 30th overall with a 26:47.38 clocking ... the women’s team finished in fifth place in a field of 36 teams ... among the 275 women’s competitors, the Spartans placed five runners in the top-50, led by freshman Beth Raymond who placed 27th overall with a 19:32.63.

 

Utah State Aggies

The Aggies had last week off and return to action this Saturday at the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, Mont.
