HONOLULU ? No. 7 Hawai`i (9-2, 2-0 WAC) swept through Boise State
(3-8, 1-1) 25-11, 25-18 and 29-27 in front of a crowd of 6,485 at the Stan
Sheriff Center Saturday.
Kanani
Herring had her sixth double-double of the season,
posting team highs in kills (10) and digs (15). Aneli Cubi-Otineru added
nine kills, five aces and four digs, while Jamie Houston had nine
kills and three digs in two sets. Stephanie Ferrell hit .500 with
five kills while Dani Mafua added 31 assists.
Back-to-back kills
by Herring capped an 8-2 start for the Rainbow Wahine in the first set. Boise State
was able to close it to 11-7 before a big 10-1 run put UH ahead 21-8. The
Broncos would score a few more points before a solo block by Mafua closed it
out, 25-11.
Hawai`i
jumped ahead 8-3 to start the second set. But Boise State
responded, scoring four of the next five points to pull within a point at 10-9.
The Broncos stayed within striking distance until late as UH used a 6-2 run to
get out in front 23-15. BSU was able to score three more points before the
Rainbow Wahine closed it out, 25-18.
In the third set, Hawaii head coach Dave Shoji started three different players off the
bench, who helped the Rainbow Wahine get out to a 7-3 edge. But the Broncos
battled, pulling within a point before a 7-3 run by UH got the lead to 19-14.
Despite allowing a 5-1 Bronco run to allow it back to a one-point difference at
20-19, an ace by Amber Kaufman capped a quick three-point spurt,
putting UH in prime position to close out the match at 23-19.
But Boise State
kept battling. BSU held off three set points before a block gave the Broncos
their own set point at 25-24. UH had to fight off set point three times on a
kill by Ferrell and two by Herring before they took back control of the set. A
block by Kaufman and Jessica Keefe
gave Hawai`i
another set point at 28-27, and this time they closed it out, forcing BSU into
a hitting error to end the set at 29-27.
The
Broncos were led by freshman Elizabeth
Griffin, who totaled a match-high 11 kills. Sophomore Lauren
Hamm put up 15 digs.

? New Mexico State
used powerful offense and solid blocking to sweep Nevada
(25-18, 25-16, 25-19) Saturday at the Pan American
Center.
The
Aggies doubled the Wolf Pack’s offensive effort, recording 44 kills to Nevada’s 22, while supplying 39 Aggie assists to Nevada’s 19. NMSU also put
up 12 blocks.
Jjunior
Krista Altermatt led the Aggies with 13 kills, while senior Lindsey Yon added
12. Freshman Jennah DeVries recorded a
game-high 20 assists, while senior libero Krystal Torres led the Aggies with a match-high
11 digs.
Senior
Amber Simpson recorded six blocks and is now 11 blocks away from breaking
NMSU’s all-time total-block record.
Freshman
Kylee
Vance led the Pack with seven kills, while junior setter Sonnie
Sei dished out 11 assists and senior libero Allison
Hernandez totaled nine digs.
NMSU
took control of the match early in set one, jumping to a 7-2 lead, and held a 10-point
advantage (18-8) on the way to the 25-18 victory. Offensively, the Pack hit .000
in set one and the Aggies .130.
Set
two started with a quick 5-1 lead for the Aggies, but the Wolf Pack rallied
back, 7-6. A sophomore Kelli Goodan kill
sparked an eight point rally and a Simpson kill would seal the deal, as the
Aggies claimed set two, 25-16.
The
third set began with the Aggies jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. Then a Simpson service ace and a kill by
Altermatt allowed the Aggies to take comfortable 17-11 lead. Senior setter Alyssa Gintant served the
Aggies to match point, 24-19 and a Yon kill would end the set, 25-19.
Fresno State
3, Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. ? Behind a career-high 13 kills by Lauren Berger, Fresno State
picked up its first WAC win of the season at Louisiana Tech 3-1 Saturday
afternoon by set scores of 25-15, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-21.
Set one was tied early and often at 1, 2, 4 and 5. Fresno State
got its first lead at 5-4 and went on to win 25-14. The Bulldogs hit .355 in
set one.
Fresno State struck early in set two and had an early 13-7
lead which forced a timeout by Louisiana Tech. Tech then cut the lead to just
two at 18-16. With Fresno
State up 20-16, Louisiana
Tech took another timeout. Points then rallied between the two teams before Tech
cut it to within one and then tied the set at 23. An error by the Bulldogs gave
Louisiana Tech its first set point of the match and the Lady Techsters
converted to win 25-23.
La. Tech took a 2-0 early lead in set three, but a
kill by Baylee Platt gave the `Dogs their first lead of the set at 3-2 and they
went on to win 25-14 on another kill by Platt.
The Bulldogs took their first lead in set three at 5-4 and
built it to 12-6. Louisiana Tech went on a rally to cut the lead to 15-13, but
Fresno State went on to win 25-21.
Platt led the `Dogs with 14 kills and completed a double-double
with 12 digs. Leonardo also tied a season-high with 10 kills. Allanah Munson
had her second-straight double-double with 45 assists and 13 digs. Meghan Moss
started at libero for the first time this season and tied a career-high with 20
digs.
Sophomore
Taylor Fritz led Louisiana Tech with 11 total kills and six digs. Setter Bianca
Bin finished with 27 assists, while senior Debora Bolonhini finished with 25 digs.
Utah State 3, San Jose
State 2 | Stats
SAN JOSE, Calif. ? Melissa Osterloh recorded a
career-high 21 kills to lead Utah State to a come-from-behind five-set win
(25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11) against San Jose State Saturday night.
Utah State never trailed in the opening set and led by as
many as seven points at 19-12 before San Jose State rallied and cut the lead to
two before losing, 25-22. In the first set, USU hit .258 and limited SJSU to a
.111 hitting percentage.
San Jose State scored the first four points of the second
set and raced out to an early 11-3 advantage as it coasted to the 10-point win.
In the set, SJSU hit .357 and held USU to a .080 hitting percentage.
The Spartans continued to play well offensively in the third
set as they hit .325 and held on for the four-point win after USU rallied from
an early six-point deficit to get within one point at 20-19, before losing by
four.
Utah State began its comeback in the fourth set as it hit
.242, while San Jose State hit .143. USU trailed for much of the set before
taking its first lead at 14-13 and would go on to win by two points.
In the fifth set, Utah State jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead
before San Jose State fought back to trail 10-9. USU then finished the match on
a 5-2 run to earn the victory. In the fifth set, USU hit .400 and SJSU hit .261.
Utah State finished the match by hitting .217 and San Jose
State hit .225. USU had four fewer service errors (9-5). Both teams finished
with 68 digs.
Osterloh, a senior outside hitter, added 13 digs to record
her second double-double of the season, while sophomore libero Christine
Morrill added a career-high with 25 digs. Sophomore Katie Astle also notched a
career-high as she had 10 kills and hit .400 in the match.
Kelly Crow had 24 kills and 17 digs for San Jose State to
lead all players in both categories, while teammate Niki Clement added 20 kills
and 11 digs.
