? No. 7 Hawai`i swept through Louisiana Tech 25-11, 25-20
and 25-16 at the Thomas
Assembly Center
Thursday.
Jamie
Houston led the Rainbow Wahine attack, hitting .341
with 21 kills and 11 digs. Stephanie Ferrell added eight kills while
hitting .583 with five digs, while Amber Kaufman hit .417 with seven
kills, four blocks and two aces. Tara Hittle led all players with 13
digs with Dani Mafua setting UH’s offense with 30 assists.
Bianca Bin paced the
Lady Techsters with five kills on .444 hitting, while Debora Bolonhini had 11
digs.
Hawai`i
opened the match on fire, scoring the first 10 points of the set on the tough
serve of Kaufman. Ferrell later served a six-point run before a block by Houston and Nickie
Thomas ended the first set, 25-11.
Kaufman again got UH
started well behind the service line to start the second set as they went ahead
5-1. The Rainbow Wahine got their lead to 12-4 on a big block by Kaufman and
Mafua, forcing a timeout by Louisiana Tech. A 3-0 run by Tech pulled it back to
14-8. The Lady Techsters then pulled within two points at 16-14 after a
four-point run. But Hawai`i
had the response, scoring the next four points to make it 20-14. From there, UH
just sided-out its way to victory, taking the second set 25-20.
The Rainbow Wahine
opened the third set with a 5-1 edge. After Tech closed to within three at 7-4,
UH used a three-point run to get it to 10-4. Hawai`i kept its lead around six points
before a 5-1 run ended the set, and the match, 25-16.
New Mexico State 3, Idaho 0
MOSCOW, Idaho ? Idaho
struggled through a 3-0 sweep at the hands of visiting New Mexico State
Thursday night, 19-25, 18-25 and 15-25.
The
Vandals hit just .113 for the match while the Aggies connected on .308 of their
attempts. Idaho
also fell behind in digs (60-50) and blocks (6-2).
Lindsey
Yon led all players with 14 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of
the season. Krystal Torres finished with 17 digs for NMSU.
Anna
McKinney finished with nine kills and hit .316 for the match, while Haley
Larsen also chipped in nine kills. Sarah Loney totaled 15 digs to lead the
Vandals.
Fresno State 3, Utah State
2
LOGAN, Utah
- After leading the
match 2-0, Fresno State had to fight off Utah State
Thursday night in five sets, by set scores of 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 13-25 and
15-13.
Utah State led 7-3 in the first set, but a
kill by Brianna Clarke tied the match at 10. Utah State
tied the set again at 17 before the `Dogs took a two-point lead at 19-17. Fresno State
had two set point opportunities, but the Aggies cut it to 24-22. On the third
set point chance for the Bulldogs, they got some help from Utah State
as they had a service error for a 25-22 Fresno State
set one win.
Utah State struck first in set two but the Aggies led by as
many as four (10-6). An ace by Allanah Munson tied the set at 10. Utah State
then scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 17-13 lead. Fresno State
then chipped away at the lead and went ahead for good, 20-19. The Bulldogs
converted on their second set point chance for a 25-22 victory.
Out of the break, Utah
State went on a huge run
and hit .259 in set three for a 25-17 victory. Liz McArthur had five kills in
the set to lead the Aggies, who were up by as many as 12.
Utah State continued it hot steak with a 4-0
lead to start set four. The Aggies would expand their lead to 20-9 and go on
for the 25-13 victory and set four win to send the match to five.
Fresno State came out quick in set five for an
8-5 lead and took an 11-6 lead after back-to-back service aces. Utah State fought back
to tie the set at 12, but the Bulldogs went on to the 15-13 win.
Clarke led the 'Dogs with 16 kills and Leonardo had a
season-high 12 kills.
Melissa Osterloh led all players with 22 kills, while Liz
McArthur added 15. Christine Morrill tallied 19 digs for the Aggies.
San Jose State 3, Nevada 2
RENO, Nev.
? Strong blocking
helped San Jose State
win its first conference match Thursday night at Nevada, 26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-7.
San Jose State trailed 11-6 in the first set, but battled
back to tie the score at 16. Nevada then took a 20-16 lead, but again San Jose
State battled the Wolf Pack and tied the match at 20. The two teams then traded
points before Brianna Amian put away one of her season-high 18 kills to give
the Spartans the 25-24 lead. San Jose State then won the set on a Wolf Pack
hitting error.
The next two sets went back and
forth between the two teams, with Nevada
prevailing 25-23 and 25-22. The Spartans
came out in the fourth set and jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage and never
relinquished the lead as they won 25-12.
The deciding fifth-set was all
Spartans as San Jose
State scored the first
six points behind Brittany Collet’s serving and blocking by Amian and Nia
Freeman. The Wolf Pack got no closer than four points (6-2) and San Jose State won the set 15-7.
The Spartans out-blocked the Wolf
Pack 10-5.
Brittany Collet ended the match with
her first double-double of the season and the ninth of her career with 49
assists and 15 digs. Kelly Crow recorded her second consecutive 20-plus kill
match with 20 kills. Three other Spartans recorded double-digit kills. Amian
had 18, followed by Niki Clement and Nia Freeman with 10 each.
Lindsay Baldwin led Nevada with 21 kills,
while Kylie Harrington posted a double-double ? 12 kills and 16 digs.
