WAC Announces September Golfers of the Month

DENVER - Boise State's Blake Brown and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro have been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for September.

Brown, a sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz. (Horizon HS), played in two tournaments last month, tying for top honors at the Palouse Collegiate and recording a tie for 14th in the Giustina Memorial Classic.  In the first tournament, Brown opened with a 73 and the responded with a 69 and then a 66 in the final round to earn a tie for first at 8-under par (73-69-66).  Last week, he shot a 1-over par 217 (72-72-73) to finish the month with a 70.8 scoring average, tied for the second best in the WAC.  His 66 tied for the best round by any WAC player last month.  He is ranked 12th in the nation by Golfstat following the two tournaments.
 
Mortellaro, a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mesa Distance Learning), had two top-three finishes last month.  Mortellaro opened her season with a third place showing at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic by shooting a 6-under par 210 (72-68-70).  She then won the WSU Inland Cup with a 3-over par 219 (74-71-74).  Idaho went on to win both tournaments.  Her scoring average of 71.5 was the second best in the WAC last month and her 68 at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic was the second best individual round by a WAC player.  She is ranked 31st in the nation by Golfstat entering this month.

Other men nominated: Jarred Bossio, Idaho; Cody Santone, Louisiana Tech; Jared Becher, Nevada; Tim Madigan, New Mexico State; Matthew Hovan, San Jose State; and Benjamin Schilleman, Utah State.

Other women nominated: Iris Ocariza, Boise State; Lindi Covarrubias, Fresno State; Jamie Yam, Nevada; Apinporn Swaschuto, New Mexico State; and Katrina Delen-Briones, San Jose State.
