DENVER - Fresno State's Bhavik Patel and San Jose State's Katrina Delen-Briones have been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for October.
Patel, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield HS), played in two tournaments last month, placing second at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic and tying for eighth at California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational. In the first tournament in Reno, Patel shot under par in all three rounds for a second place finish of 8-under par 208 (71-67-70). A week later, he had a 5-under par 137 (71-66) in the rain-shortened tournament in Fairfax, Calif. His 66 is tied for the fourth best round by any WAC player this year. Patel's scoring average of 69.0, leads all WAC players.
Delen-Briones, a junior from San Francisco, Calif. (Lowell HS), competed in two tournaments during the month and won the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Redmond, Wash. She shot a 3-over par 219 (73-75-71) that included a 1-under par 71 in the final round. Delen-Briones made a 4-foot downhill putt on the 18th hole to take medalist honors. In the second tournament, she tied for 17th with a 2-over par 215 (71-72-72) at the Stanford Intercollegiate. Her scoring average of 72.3 led all WAC players during the month.
