Boise State

The Boise State men's cross country team completed their 2009 campaign on Saturday morning racing in the NCAA West Region Championships hosted by the University of Oregon at the Springfield Country Club in Eugene, Ore. The Bronco men finished 15th out of 26 teams while Boise State's sole women's competitor, freshman Shannon Porter, placed 101st out of 184 runners.

Boise State's women's team did not qualify for the NCAA West Region Championships, however, Porter qualified as an individual placing 101st in her first NCAA race. Porter clocked a time of 22 minutes, 59.35 seconds over the 6-kilometer course.

The Bronco men scored 443 team points in the 10-kilometer race with freshman Jeff Howard leading the team with his 54th-place finish. Howard clocked a time of 32 minutes, 4.23 seconds to lead the orange and blue pack. Junior Sawyer Bosch was the second Bronco to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 32 minutes, 59.50 seconds to place 94th overall.

Finishing at nearly the same time, juniors Scott Foley and Kevin Higgs placed 97th and 98th, respectively, running in times of 33 minutes, 6.7 seconds and 33 minutes 7.31 seconds. Sophomore Brian Pierre rounded out the scoring Broncos with his 110th-place finish, clocking a time of 33 minutes, 24.54 seconds. Boise State's sixth and final runner was freshman Zach Wiles who placed 119th overall. Wiles ran a time of 33 minutes, 35.09 seconds. Freshman Kevin Rosaaen who was scheduled to race did not start.

Stanford won the men's team title with 27 team points, capturing the top three individual places. Chris Derrick, who earned the individual race title with a time of 30 minutes, 38.84 seconds, led the Cardinal. The University of Portland men finished second as a team with 84 points.

The University of Washington was the team champion in the women's race with 25 team points, earning the first and third place individual finishes to lead the pack. Kendra Schaaf, who ran the course in a time of 20 minutes, 41.70 seconds, led the Huskies. The University of Oregon women finished second as a team with 66 points.

The Broncos conclude their 2009 season with the NCAA West Region Championships. The top-two teams in each race advance to the NCAA National Championships. The NCAA National Championships will be held on Monday, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.


Fresno State


The Fresno State cross country season came to a close Saturday at the NCAA West Regional in Springfield, Ore. The Bulldog men ran in their first 10K of the season, taking 17th among the 28 highly-ranked teams from the region.

The field of competition ran deep at Saturday's race as top-ranked Stanford led all teams, filling in the first three spots of the race. No. 7 Portland upset No. 3 Oregon for second place as the host Ducks finished third. Washington, Cal Poly and Arizona State rounded out the top 5.

"We didn't follow our race plan today," said cross country coach Sean McManus. "You can't expect to perform well when you do that. But we only have one senior, so we'll be back to correct those mistakes next year."

Erick Garcia led the team as the `Dog's top finisher, clocking a 32:45.49 for 78th place, despite getting tripped and then trampled on around the halfway mark. The junior was the second-place finisher from the WAC behind Boise State's Jeff Howard.

Paul Zwama took the second spot for Fresno State, finishing just a few ticks back of Garcia. Zwama timed a 32:48.49 in his first NCAA Regional to take 81st overall.

The Bulldog's lone senior, Frank Sanders, was the team's third finisher. Sanders ran a 33:02.90 for 95th in his final cross country race.

Danny Vartanian and Eric Battles filled in the fourth spots for Fresno State, finishing within .30 seconds of each other. Vartanian ran a 33:51.26 to take 130th in his first 10K. Battles took the final scoring spot with a 33:51.57 for 131st.

Carson Keller and Elijah Carrillo also competed in the NCAA Regional to round out the team's seven competitors.

Roxanne Sellick represented the Bulldogs women at the NCAA Regional running the 6K in 22:52.54. The redshirt senior placed 93rd among the 184 competitors to close out her cross country career.

The NCAA Regional marked the final race of the year for the Fresno State cross country teams.


Hawai‘i

The University of Hawai‘i women’s cross country season came to a close Saturday at the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championship at the Springfield Country Club. Senior Jessica Forrester was UH’s lone representative.
 
Competing as an individual, Forrester completed the 6K course in 23:07.57 for 113th place. Forrester was UH’s top finisher in three meets this season and transferred to UH as an All-American from the University of Tampa.
 
In her only season with UH, Forrester won one meet and was runner-up in another. She was among UH’s top two finishers in all five meets this season.
 
Kendra Schaaf captured the individual championship with time of 20:41.70 and helped Washington win the team title as five runners placed in the Top 10.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will next prepare for the indoor track and field season, which begins in January.


Nevada

Janet Martinez was Nevada’s top finisher at the 6K NCAA Mountain Regionals hosted by New Mexico Saturday morning at the UNM Golf Course.

As a team, the Pack finished 16th out of 20 teams in a field that included several ranked teams including No. 6 Colorado, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 20 New Mexico, No. 22 BYU.

Martinez finished 61st out of 132 runners with a time of 22:34 while Katarina Ratkowiak finished 70th with a time of 22:47.6.  Jordan Burke finished 76th with a time of 22:55.2.

Natalia Jarawka and Samantha Diaz rounded out the top five for Nevada finishing 107th (23:32.9) and 112th (23:49.6) respectively.  Mandy Russ finished 113th with a time of 23:50.5.

“Today was a rough day at the ranch,” head coach Kirk Elias said.  “We aren’t deep enough to have two of top five have rough days at this level. This team this year did a marvelous job at WAC.  I’m encouraged that three of top four are back next year – so we’ll have big future ahead of us the next.”


New Mexico State


ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-The New Mexico State cross country teams concluded the 2009 season at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Saturday, Nov. 14, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Both teams raced the longest trails of the season with a 10k for the men and a 6k trail for the women. Ian Ruybalid (Los Lunas, N.M.) and Courtney Schultz (Cloudcroft, N.M.) paced the Aggies in this race coming in 41st and 24th, respectively.

Assistant coach Meaghan Gregory said the coaches are pleased with the performance at the meet.

"We were not perfect, but it was a solid day," Gregory said. "It goes to show when we aren't perfect, we can still compete with the top teams."

The Aggie women finished ninth after being ranked 12th coming into the race. The ninth-place finish is a seven spot improvement from the 2008 regional competition. The team was had a total of 262 points, just one point shy of eighth place.

Schultz was the fourth freshman to finish the race and clocked a time of 21:39.6. Her 24th-place finish earned Schultz all-region accolades and put her in position to qualify for the NCAA National Championships (Nov. 23), in Terre Haute, Ind.

Following Schultz for the Aggies was Camille Schultz (Cloudcroft, N.M.) in 38th. Camille was the eighth freshman to cross the line overall. Senior Ingrid Flores (El Paso, Texas) came in just behind the Schultz sisters with a time of 22:27.1. Flores placed 54th, beating out more than 80 runners.

Also helping the women to the ninth-place finish was Brandi Gutierrez in 72nd, Chelsa McDonnell in 74th, Amy Arenas in 106th and Brittany Hurtado in 108th.

The Aggie men finished the season in 14th overall, against a number of nationally-ranked teams. NM State was paced by Ruybalid in 41st place, more than 20 spots better than in 2008. Ruybalid clocked a time of 31:50.7 in the 10k. Behind Ruybalid was freshman Jonah Ruybalid (Los Lunas, N.M.) in 58th. Jonah was the sixth freshman to cross the line overall.

Freshman Ryan Fenton (Albuquerque, N.M.) was next to cross the line for the Aggies in 84th. Following Fenton was freshmen Kevin Taft (92nd) and Robert Selph (100th). Junior Michael Hart (104th) was sixth Aggie to cross the finish followed by Terry Williams (116th).

As the cross country season concludes, the coaches said they are extremely pleased with the teams overall performance this season.

"We took a lot of steps in the right direction this year, and I think we'll continue to do that," Gregory said.

NM State will shift gears to track and field, starting with the indoor season. The first indoor meet kicks off with the Lobo Opener Jan. 16, in Albuquerque, N.M.


San Jose State

Springfield, Ore.---San Jose State Individual participants Alfredo Coronado, and David Haefele crossed the finish line in 106th, and 166th place respectively at the NCAA West Regional Meet in Springfield, Oregon.

Coronado finished the 10K course winding through Springfield Country Club Golf Course in 33:22.21. Haefele followed with a finishing time of 35:08.34.

Chris Derrick (30:38.84) of Stanford finished in first place overall in the 182 man field, and helped lead the Cardinal to a team first place finish as well. The closest to Stanford's final score of 27 was the University of Portland with 84.


Utah State

Utah State's men's cross country team finished seventh at the NCAA Mountain Regional Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M., while the Aggie women placed 14th in its final team competition of the season.

Sophomore Brian McKenna led the Aggie men as he finished the 10k course in 19th-place with a time of 30:57.5. Freshman Alex Litzsinger was the top finisher for the Aggie women as she competed the 6k course in 22:18.5 to place 41st.

Following McKenna for Utah State was junior Nick Bolinder who finished 23rd overall with a time of 31:07.0. Also doing well for the Aggies was sophomore Daniel Howell who finished 27th in 31:12.7.

Other Aggie finishers for the men included Steve Atkinson (32:04.2) who placed 49th and senior Jason Holt (32:10.1) who came in 53rd. Senior Steve Strickland (32:19.4) took 61st and junior Chio Lopez (32:57.3) rounded out the USU finishers tabbing 83rd.

Brigham Young won the men's team championship with 54 points and was followed closely by Colorado with 55 points. Host New Mexico took third with 77 points.

On the women's side, sophomore Jessie Chugg (22:44.9) finished 67th-place, while junior Alicia Holt (23:01.7) finished in 82nd-place. Following Holt was junior Justine Baugh (23:10.5) in 91st place and junior Kim Quinn (23:22.5) tabbed 100th. Following close behind was freshman Kaylee Campbell (23:25.3) in 103rd while senior Erin Stratton (23:29.3) came in 104th.

Colorado took first overall on the women's side with 48 points while Texas Tech finished second with 53 points. BYU finished in third-place with 114 points.

The top two teams in each region receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 24th.
