DENVER - San Jose State's Heather Denman and Northern Arizona's Taryn Harris were named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference swimmer and diver of the week, respectively.
Denman, a sophomore from Brookeville, Md. (Sherwood HS), was San Jose State's top performer at the Toshiba Classic in Long Beach, Calif. last weekend. Denman set three WAC individual season-bests and was a member of three relays that also set top times in the WAC this year. Denman broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA consideration time of 1:58.54 and finished third in the event. She took second place in the 100 back with another NCAA consideration time of 54.06. In her other individual event, the 100 butterfly, she placed eighth and swam a time of 54.63 in the prelims. Denman was also a member of the 400 medley relay (3:46.54) that placed fifth, the 200 medley relay (1:43.37) that placed fourth and the 400 free relay (3:25.31) that also came in fourth. San Jose State took sixth place at the 25-team meet, finishing above the other four WAC teams that were also entered.
Harris, a junior from East Wenatchee, Wash. (Southridge HS), finished in fourth place on the 1-meter board and seventh on the 3-meter at the Wildcat Diving Invitatonal in Tucson, Arizona last weekend. She scored 268.45 points on the 1-meter and 256.25 on the 3-meter. Her efforts produced NCAA Zone Qualifying scores in both events. The invitational included more than 70 divers from 12 schools.
