REED NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Idaho’s Lachlan Reed has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Month for November. This is the first honor of the season and career for Reed.
A junior from Brisbane, Australia, Reed advanced to the semifinals of the PNW Intercollegiate Tournament in Seattle. He overcame Filipp Pogostkin of Boise State and Alex Rosinski of Washington before falling in the semifinals to Washington’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. Reed and partner Adrian Simon also made it to the doubles quarterfinal.
Other nominees included: Boise State’s Jeff Mullen went 1-2 in singles and 2-1 in doubles during the month … Gabe Kanzelmeyer of Nevada reached the consolation semifinals of the Gael Classic, hosted by Saint Mary’s.
JOLI DROPS BOTH MATCHES AT NATIONAL INDOORS
Boise State’s Vicente Joli dropped both his matches at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. In the first round, he fell to the tournament’s No. 6 seed, Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to fall from the winner’s bracket. In his second match, Joli fell to No. 46 Ed Corrie of Texas, 6-4, 6-2, to end his run at the tournament.
IDAHO’S REED ADVANCES TO SEMIS AT UW INVITE
Idaho’s Lachlan Reed advanced to the singles “A” flight semifinals at the PNW Intercollegiate, where he fell to eventual tournament winner Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Nedunchezhiyan has been ranked as high as ninth in the world junior rankings and has been nationally-ranked during his time at Washington. In earlier rounds, Reed knocked of Boise State’s Filipp Pogostkin, who was the 18th-ranked recruit in the 2009 recruiting class, in straight sets.
In addition, both Adrian Simon and Abid Akbar advanced to the semifinals in the singles “B” flight, while Simon and Reed teamed up to advance to the quarterfinals in doubles.
NEVADA’S KANZELMEYER LOSES IN SEMIS AT GAEL CLASSIC
Nevada senior Gabe Kanzelmeyer advanced to the semifinals of the Gael Classic, hosted by Saint Mary’s. After falling to Santa Clara’s Eugene Muchynski 7-6 (2); 7-6 (3), he moved into the White A consolation, where he defeated Sonoma State’s Bryce Keefer, 6-2, 6-2. In the consolation quarterfinals the following day, Kanzelmeyer defeated San Francisco’s Peder Steen, 6-4, 6-0. He was then defeated by Sonoma State’s Connor Olson, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) in the consolation semifinals.
In doubles play, the Wolf Pack’s Wessim Derbel and Kristian Kuharsky fell to San Francisco’s Rainer Nachbauer and William Schumacher, 8-5. In the White A Doubles Consolations flight, Alex Daruty and Kanzelmeyer defeated Drexler Dy and Stewart Hutton of Sonoma State, 8-4, yet missed the semifinals.
BOISE STATE FARES WELL AT PNW INTERCOLLEGIATE
At the PNW Intercollegiate Tournament, Boise State’s Cristian Hodel and Jeff Mullen beat Jake Davis and Levin Guillermo of Gonzaga 8-5, before taking down Lachlan Reed and Adrian Simon of Idaho, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. Their run would end there, however, as they lost to Brad Bator and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan if Washington, 8-1, in the round of four.
In singles, Freddy Walsh beat Sho Higuchi of Oregon, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 32, then earned a win by injury default to advance to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Skyler Tateishi of Washington, 6-4, 6-3. Mullen rebounded from a first-round loss to beat Stefan Simikic of Eastern Washington (6-4, 3-6, 7-6) in consolation play. Hodel also dropped his first round match, but came back with a win over Nico Riego De Dios of EWU (6-4, 4-6, 7-6) in the back draw. Both Mullen and Hodel lost their next matches to bow out of consolation play. Filipp Pogostkin opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chris Rice of Portland State, before falling in the round of 16 to Reed, 6-4, 6-2.
PATTON TO COACH INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Boise State men’s tennis coach Greg Patton has been selected to help lead some of the top collegiate men and women’s tennis players at the 2009 Master’U BNP Paribas, an eight-nation international tennis tournament that will be held in Poitiers, France, Dec. 9-14.
The Master’U BNP Paribas features eight teams comprised of college and university players from around the world. The U.S. will be competing for the second consecutive year, this time facing off against teams from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Mexico.
The tournament is set in a best-of-seven format, with two men’s and two women’s singles matches, one men’s and one women’s doubles match, and one mixed doubles match. Patton will join Illinois women’s tennis coach Michelle Dasso in coaching this year’s U.S. team.
Patton is in his 14th season leading the Broncos and has led Boise State to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and five WAC titles. In 2009, Patton led the Broncos to a Sweet 16 finish at the NCAA Tournament.
WAC IN THE PRESEASON RANKINGS
In the 2009 preseason ITA rankings, the WAC has four singles players ranked. Leading the way at No. 43 is Hawai’i’s Dennis Lajola, followed by James Meredith of Boise State at No. 53. Nevada’s Wessim Derbel is No. 93. Rounding out the group is Andres Weber of Hawai’i at No. 119.
In doubles, Boise State’s Meredith and Vicente Joli are ranked No. 41, while Lajola and Jeremy Tweedt of Hawai’i are No. 49.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN FRESNO
The 2010 WAC Tennis Tournament will be held April 29-May 2 in Fresno, Calif., where Hawai‘i will look for its third-straight crown. Last year, the Rainbow Warriors knocked off top-seeded Boise State, 4-2.
