Chula Vista, Calif.---For the second consecutive
tournament and the first time in the spring season, the San Jose State
women’s golf team won the team title at the Aztec Invitational on a
Tuesday with a three-day total of 900.
The Spartans, who shot
the second lowest team score of the third round with a 300, won the
tournament by six strokes over UC Irvine at the Salt Creek Golf Course
in Chula Vista, Calif. Teams had to finish the second round Tuesday
morning before a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start for round three. After
shooting an even-par 288 in the first round, San Jose State finished
the second round with the second lowest team score at 312.
“We
found a way to win this tournament,” said San Jose State head coach
John Dormann. “This tournament seemed very long after the second round
was suspended on Monday and having to finish that round and play 18
holes today. The weather was perfect on Sunday, pouring rain and windy
on Monday and decent today even though it rained, hailed and got cold
at one point during the round.
“We hit the ball well all three
days despite the weather and course conditions. We played our game,
avoided the bad areas, kept the ball in play and made good decisions on
the course. This was a good win for us after beating some good teams.”
San
Jose State was the only team to have all five players shoot in the 70s
in the third round on Tuesday. All five players finished in the top-35,
including two in the top-10.
Individually, Erica Moston finished
tied for second with a five-over par 221. She finished the tournament
with eight birdies in her three round. Her second-place finish is the
best for Moston this season.
“The course was in pretty good
condition even though there were a lot of wet spots,” said Moston. “I
just missed too many putts today and didn’t take advantage of the
opportunities I had.
“The team win was great after finishing
last semester with a win and starting this semester with another
tournament win. It feels great to start the semester this way and pick
up where we left off in the fall.”
Katrina Delen-Briones
recorded her season-best finish in sixth place. She shot an eight-over
par 224 over the three rounds and recorded three birdies in her final
round after five in round one. Delen-Briones had the team’s low score
in the final round with a 73.
Madeleine Ziegert saved her best
round for Tuesday with a 74 that included two birdies in her round. She
finished the tournament tied for 16th at 12-over par.
Shraddhanjali
Singh and Cristina Corpus each shot a 77 in the final round Tuesday.
Singh finished 18th at 13-over par, while Corpus tied at 31st at
18-over par.
“One of the biggest keys to this tournament win was
getting good scores from all five players throughout,” said Dormann.
“Everyone contributed to make this a true team win, and it was nice to
see our younger players compete so well, especially today. As a team,
we are playing well and still developing good young players to help the
program continue to grow.”
The two tournament wins are the most
for the Spartans since the 2005-06 season when San Jose State recorded
four victories that year ? Wolf Pack Invitational, Spartan
Invitational, Oregon Duck Invitational and Western Athletic Conference
Championship.
