Utah State Secures WAC Regular Season Title Thursday Night

Utah State 82, Hawai?i 62

LOGAN, Utah (AP)-- Gary Wilkinson scored 27 points to lead four Aggies in double figures as Utah State ran past Hawaii 82-62 Thursday night.

Tai Wesley scored 16 for the Aggies (26-3, 13-1 Western Athletic Conference), while Tyler Newbold scored 12 and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Jared Quayle added 10 points.

Hiram Thompson scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Rainbow Warriors (13-14, 5-9). Bill Amis scored 12, and Roderick Fleming 10.

Utah State put together a 13-0 run midway through the second half, a stretch of four minutes in which Hawaii did not score but turned the ball over three times, all leading to scores by the Aggies. Utah State outrebounded Hawaii 36-25, and the Warriors had 16 turnovers in the game.

Both teams shot 54 percent in the first half, with Utah State taking a 41-28 halftime lead.

The win gave Utah State the regular-season conference championship with two league games remaining.

Fresno State 68, Nevada 66

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)-- Sylvester Seay scored 28 points, including two free throws that capped a rare five-point play, as Fresno State held off Nevada 68-66 Thursday night.

Last-place Fresno State (12-17, 3-10 WAC) needed a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer by Like Babbitt to seal the victory.

Nevada (16-11, 8-5) had its three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in eight tries against Fresno State.

The play that put the Bulldogs ahead came with 1:01 remaining. Nedeljko Golubovic hit a 3-pointer in Babbitt's face just as Seay drew a foul on Malik Cooke under the basket. Seay hit both free throws as Fresno State turned a one-point deficit into a 66-62 lead.

Seay scored 20 of his points in the second half, including one stretch when he hit three straight 3-pointers. Golubovic added 18 points and shot 4-for-7 behind the arc.

Fresno State coach Steve Cleveland picked up his 200th career victory with the Bulldogs' first win over Nevada since Jan. 18, 2006.

Babbitt led Nevada with 18 points and teammate Malik Cooke added 16.

Fresno State guard Dwight O'Neil played for the first time since Jan. 28. He missed the past seven games and had been suspended since Jan. 31, the day after he was jailed on a warrant for driving on a suspended or revoked license. O'Neil served six days in Fresno County Jail and was released Feb. 5.

A starter through the first 19 games, O'Neil came off the bench for the first time and finished with nine points.

Louisiana Tech 80, New Mexico State 71

RUSTON, La. (AP)-- Magnum Rolle recorded a double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 boards, to lead Louisiana Tech in an 80-71 win over New Mexico State on Thursday night.

Jamel Guyton added 18 points, including going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, for the Bulldogs (13-16, 5-9 Western Athletic Conference). Kyle Gibson scored 17 points and James Loe had 10 for Louisiana Tech, which won its third straight game.

Jahmar Young paced the Aggies (15-13, 8-6) with 22 points, while Jonathan Gibson and Gordo Castillo added 11 apiece. Young was 4-for-7 from 3-point range for the Aggies, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

The Bulldogs shot 52 percent from the field (26 of 50) compared to a 43.4 percent mark (23 of 53) for the Aggies. Both teams hit eight 3-pointers in the contest, but the Bulldogs attempted just 13 shots versus 20 for the Aggies.

San Jose State 72, Idaho 64

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)-- Justin Graham scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half to lead short-handed San Jose State to a 72-64 victory over Idaho on Thursday night.

The Spartans (12-14, 5-8 WAC) won without starting forward Tim Pierce, who was out for what the school called academic reasons. Pierce had started every game this season and he was second on the team in scoring and third in rebounding.

The Spartans had five players score in double-figures, including Adrian Oliver (14 points), C.J. Webster (12), Robert Owens (11) and DeVonte Thomas (10).

San Jose State used dominating play on the glass to get the victory. The Spartans outrebounded the Vandals 43-18. Idaho, which came into the game last in the conference in rebounding, managed only four offensive rebounds all night.

Mac Hobson scored 20 points to lead Idaho (13-14, 6-7), but also had a critical gaffe late in the game.

Idaho, which had trailed for much of the second half, was within one point with 4:31 remaining. Hobson was looking to the bench while dribbling when he was stripped of the ball by Graham. Hobson then fouled Graham intentionally. Graham hit one free throw and a jumper on the ensuing possession to put San Jose State back up by four.

The Vandals' chances sunk further when they missed five consecutive free throws in the final minutes.

Idaho led by as many 10 points in the first half, taking a 29-19 lead on Luciano de Souza's 3-pointer with 5:39 to go. San Jose State was able to climb back and go into the break down just 33-32.

Graham's jumper in the opening seconds of the second half gave San Jose State its first lead since the game's opening five minutes. Owens hit a 3-pointer to give the Spartans a 45-38 lead at the 15:23 mark. The Spartans hit seven of their first 10 shots after halftime.

The Vandals came back to tie the game at 51 on Trevor Morris' 3-pointer with 10:51 to go, but they could not pull ahead.
