DENVER - Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson today announced an agreement with Verizon Wireless that enables the communications company to become the title sponsor for the WAC men and women's basketball tournament that will be held in Reno, Nevada, March 10-14.

"We're proud to sponsor the 2009 WAC Basketball Tournament," said Rich Garwood, region president for Verizon Wireless. "Verizon Wireless has long been a supporter of college athletics and we're excited to be part of the upcoming championship tournament in Reno."

"We are thrilled to have Verizon Wireless as the title sponsor of our most prestigious WAC championship," said Benson. "All of the fans in our markets are already familiar with the national brand and reputation of Verizon Wireless.  This association between the two entities will be a win-win situation for everyone involved."

The sponsorship was facilitated by the partnership between the WAC and Learfield Sports, the conference's marketing affiliate.
