Saturday's WAC Men's Basketball Results

Nevada 84, Utah State 71

RENO, Nev. (AP)-- Armon Johnson scored 28 points and Luke Babbitt 21 as Nevada opened a 23-point lead in the first half Saturday night, then hung on to beat Utah State 84-71.

Johnson made 11-of-18 shots from the field and Babbitt hit 10-of-11 free throws while pulling down nine rebounds for the Wolf Pack, who are 17-11, 9-5 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Gary Wilkinson had a team-high 16 points and Tai Wesley 10 points and 10 rebounds for Utah State (26-4, 13-2), which has already clinched the WAC regular season title.

Nevada led 47-32 at the half and was ahead by as much as 41-18 thanks mostly to making six of it's first shots from 3-point range -- two by Johnson and one each by Babbitt, Lyndale Burleson and Brandon Fields, who finished with 16 points.

Louisiana Tech 76, Boise State 62

RUSTON, La. (AP)-- James Loe scored 23 points to lead Louisiana Tech to a 76-62 win over Boise State on Saturday night.

Kyle Gibson added 21 points and Olu Ashaolu had 15 for the Bulldogs (14-16, 6-9 Western Athletic Conference), who have won four straight games. Loe also chipped in five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Kurt Cunningham led the Broncos (17-10, 7-6) with 15 points and Ike Okoye had 12. The Broncos have dropped three straight.

The Bulldogs led by two points at halftime and outscored the Broncos 47-35 in the second half to seal the win.

The Bulldogs went 8-for-14 from beyond the arc, while the Broncos hit just 5 of 17 from behind the 3-point line. The Bulldogs made 22 free throws, while the Broncos sank just 13 foul shots in the game.

Louisiana Tech scored 22 points off 21 Boise State turnovers.

San Jose State 61, Hawai?i 59

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)-- Adrian Oliver scored 20 points, including a pair of tie-breaking free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining, as San Jose State tied its largest Western Athletic Conference win total in program history with a 61-59 victory over Hawaii on Saturday.

The Spartans (13-14, 6-8), who are assured of a first-round bye in the WAC conference tournament for the first time since 2001, also received 12 points and eight rebounds from C.J. Webster.

Roderick Flemings scored 20 points to lead Hawaii, but the Warriors (13-15, 5-10 WAC) went scoreless over the final 3:36 to lose for the fourth time in five games.

Bill Amis added 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, but missed a pair of critical foul shots with 9.4 seconds to go that would have put Hawaii ahead.

Hawaii's Adhar Mayen initially grabbed Amis' second miss, but his pass out to the perimeter was scooped up by the Spartans' DaShawn Wright.

Wright quickly found Oliver, who went up for a left-handed layup try but missed while his jersey was being grabbed by Kareem Nitoto. Nitoto, who was injured on the play and remained down for a couple minutes before gingerly walking off the court, was assessed an intentional foul.

Oliver hit both of those shots, but missed another pair that would have iced the game after being fouled on the ensuing inbounds play.

Amis collected the second attempt, but with 2.7 seconds left and inbounding under their own hoop, the Rainbows could only generate a 40-foot desperation heave by Hiram Thompson, which came up well short.

Little-used reserve DeVonte Thomas hit all four of his shots to contribute eight points for the Spartans, who have won three of four games and swept their season series with Hawaii for the first time since 2003.

San Jose has won six conference games only twice in its 12 previous seasons as a WAC member, in 2000-01 and 2001-02. The Spartans have two chances to top that mark, but it will be a tall order; San Jose finishes its WAC regular-season schedule with road games at Nevada and Utah State, the conference's top two teams.

Idaho 71, Fresno State 68

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)-- Trevor Morris scored 14 points and Mac Hopson had 13, including the clinching free throws, as Idaho held off Fresno State 71-68 on Saturday night.

Marvin Jefferson added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Vandals, who evened their overall record at 14-14 and improved to 7-7 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Sylvester Seay scored 23 points for Fresno State (12-18, 3-11), including a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Mychal Ladd gave the Bulldogs some life with 1:08 left by stealing the ball in the backcourt and converting a layup to trim Idaho's lead to 69-65.

But following a Vandals turnover, Bryce Cartwright missed two free throws to keep Fresno State's deficit at four.

Hopson sealed the victory by intercepting a Ladd pass at the three-point arc, drawing the foul and making two free throws with 18.4 seconds left. The junior point guard also had 10 assists.

The Vandals shot 52.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded Fresno State 40-31 to overcome 15 turnovers.

Idaho grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 65-54, on Kashif Watson's layup with 6:54 left, forcing a Bulldogs timeout.

The Vandals twice built nine-point margins midway through the second half, helped by two Luciano de Souza 3-pointers.

Paul George's 3-pointer on Fresno State's opening possession of the second half tied the game at 40-40. George finished with 19 points.

Morris went 4-of-4 from three-point range off the bench in the first half for Idaho. His 12 points paced the Vandals to a 40-37 halftime lead.

Nedeljko Golubovic and Dwight O'Neil scored nine points apiece for Fresno State, all in the first half when the Bulldogs had 11 assists and two turnovers.

There were nine lead changes and five ties in the seesaw first half. Idaho shot 61.5 percent compared to 50 percent for Fresno State.
