TEAM NOTES
Fresno State Bulldogs (10-5, 0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs went 5-1 over the week, winning the 31st Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif. ... Fresno State outscored its opponents 55-12 ... strong defense was present as the Bulldogs turned nine double plays in six games and the pitching staff threw a combined ERA of 1.83 over the week ... the offense came alive and the Bulldogs hit seven home runs, 11 doubles and recorded 49 RBI’s ... the team posted its second-largest single game run total so far this season in the Bulldogs’ 20-0 drubbing of Buffalo at home last Saturday ... the largest run total was also against the Bulls on March 8, when FS registered 22 runs ... Fresno State improves to 10-5 on the season ... after eight games at home, FS hits the road to face LMU March 20-22 at Page Stadium.
Hawai?i Rainbows (10-6, 0-0 WAC)
With four wins against Loyola Marymount last week, Hawai`i is on a seven-game winning streak, the longest since April 28-May 6, 2006 ... UH’s sweep of LMU was the first four-game sweep since March, 2007 ... the Rainbows had a flair for the dramatic this weekend, scoring the go-ahead runs in the 10th, eighth, seventh and eighth innings in the four-game series ... UH travels to Portland, Ore., this week to compete in the Rose City Baseball Invitational ... the team will try its luck against Washington, Portland and Oregon over the four-game tournament.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (10-5, 0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs went 2-2 last week with their two wins coming at Stephen F. Austin and Southern Miss ... Tuesday’s game at SFA lasted 10 innings and was Tech’s first extra innings win since March 29, 2008, against San Jose State ... Kevin Winn leads the conference with a 16-game hitting streak, while teammate Patrick Thomas owns a streak of 11 straight games with a hit, good for second-best in the WAC ... Dylan Moseley earned his third win of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.80 in Sunday’s 11-4 victory at USM ... Devon Dageford led Tech with a .467 batting average during the week ... As a team, Tech is batting .308 and have surpassed the 100-mark in runs, hits and RBI.
Nevada Wolf Pack (7-10, 0-0 WAC)
Head coach Gary Powers won his 800th game all coming at Nevada when the Pack defeated Oregon 6-5 last Thursday ... the Pack went 3-2 on the week ... on his way to earning WAC Pitcher of the Week, Derek Achelpohl won his first game of the season, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven in the 2-1 victory over the Ducks ... the seven strikeotus was one off his career-high of eight ... the one run allowed was his first earned run allowed this season in 16 innings pitched four of Nevada’s five games during the week were one-run contests ... Nevada had two 2-1 wins, a 6-5 victory and a 6-5 loss, while the fifth game was a 3-0 loss.
NMSU Aggies (17-2, 0-0 WAC)
The Aggies picked up win No. 500 at Presley Askew field on Saturday, March 14 ... New Mexico State now has 46 home runs on the season, which leads the conference, while boasting a .358 batting average ... the Aggies lead the nation in offense with 12.6 runs per game and are fourth in the nation in scoring margin at +7.2 ... winning WAC Hitter of the Week honors, Bryan Marquez picked up a season-high in at-bats (5), hits (3) and tied a career-high in RBI’s (5) as he hit a solo home run and the game tying grand slam to lead NM State to a 10-inning 11-10 victory over Northern Colorado ... the Aggies are now 15-2, which is their best start in program history. The 1990 NM State team started at 13-2 before going onto a 19-3 record through 21 games.
Sacramento State Hornets (7-8, 0-0 WAC)
The Hornets posted a 4-1 record on the week, outscoring their opponents 31-20 ... senior Blake Crosby posted a .526 batting average on the week, going 10-for-19 at the plate with 10 singles and five RBI ... senior Hunter Martinez was 4-for-4 in stolen bases on the week ... the Hornets will have Monday off before finishing the four-game series with Saint Mary’s on Tuesday. That game will start a stretch for the Hornets where they play six games in eight days, without a doubleheader ... senior Eric Fregosi allowed just one hit and no runs in 5.0 innings of work on the week, earning a victory over Saint Mary’s and a save against UC Davis ... Fregosi retired 16 of the 17 batters he faced, with his opponents posting just a .059 batting average.
SJSU Spartans (14-3, 0-0 WAC)
San Jose State won its fourth straight weekend series to begin the 2009 season, this time at Cal State Northridge, winning the final two meetings after dropping a tough opener, 4-3 in 11 innings, on Friday ... the Spartans, who are atop the conference in fielding percentage, turned a season-high four double plays in the 6-1 Sunday victory to clinch the series ... all three of San Jose State’s weekend rotation starters, David Berner, Max Peterson and Scott Sobczak, currently sport 3-0 win-loss marks ... the Spartans also pace the WAC in team ERA (3.03), and have not allowed more than seven runs in any of their 14 games to date ... San Jose State, which entered the national rankings at No. 25 a week ago for the first time since 2002, heads into a six-game homestand in the week ahead, with all six contests coming in a span of six days between Tuesday night and Sunday afternoon.
