DENVER ? Louisiana Tech forward Shanavia Dowdell has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 23-March 1. This is the third WAC Player of the Week honor of the season for Dowdell.
The junior from Calera, Ala., led the Techsters to a crucial 53-46 win over Utah State, snapping the Aggies’ four-game winning streak. She recorded her WAC-leading 14th double-double of the season of 18 points and 13 rebounds while adding four steals and blocking three shots. Dowdell hit 7-of-13 field goals (54 percent) and 4-of-5 free throws. The win propelled Tech into a match-up with league-leader Fresno State Monday night with first place in the WAC on the line.
Other nominees included: Courtney VanBrocklin of Boise State averaged 15.0 points as the Broncos went 1-1 on the week ... Fresno State’s Jaleesa Ross scored a game-high 18 points in the Bulldogs’ win over Nevada ... Keisha Kanekoa of Hawai?i averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 5.0 steals as the Rainbow Wahine went 1-1 on the week ... Idaho’s Rachele Kloke scored a career-high 20 points in the Vandals’ three-point win over Hawai?i ... Danisha Corbett of New Mexico State scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Aggies’ only game last week ... Utah State’s Shawnta Pope averaged 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds as the Aggies went 1-1 on the week.
