San Jose State Wins Club Glove WAC Women's Golf Championship

RENO, NEV. -- San Jose State led wire-to-wire to win the Club Glove WAC Women's Golf Championship at Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno, Nev.  It is the third WAC title for the Spartans and first since the 2006 season.  San Jose State posted a three-round total of 870 (+6) to win the title by 19 strokes over Idaho (889).

“We knew we should win this tournament if we executed our game and played to our capabilities,” said Spartan head coach John Dormann. “The wind started blowing on the back-nine today, and we got a small case of the nerves at the same time. This was a true team title as every player contributed to this championship. Now we just wait to see where we are going for regionals.”

San Jose State senior Erica Moston won the individual title after starting today's round in third place.  Moston's 70 on Wednesday was the best final round score of the day and enabled her to be the only player to finish under par at -2 (71-73-70--214).  It was her second WAC title after winning the 2007 championship and the fourth be a Spartan player in the last six years.  A pair of freshmen tied for second in Fresno State's Louisa Lies and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro (217, +1).

Starting the day in third place, Moston started her final round with a birdie on the first hole. She then bogeyed the fifth before birdies on six and eight put her at two-under as she made the turn. On the back nine, Moston had a bogey on 10, birdie on 13 and bogey on 14. After three consecutive pars, she birdied her final hole to end the round at two-under.

“I came into today knowing I had a chance to win and just had to keep fighting,” said Moston. “I made some bad mistakes on this course but had enough birdies for the win. I knew that if I kept my composure and didn’t get frustrated, like I did on Tuesday, I figured I could win.

“Winning player of the year for the second time is awesome. It shows how consistent I played all year. If you want to be a good player, you have to be consistent.”

In the rest of the team competition, defending champion Fresno State was third (896, +32), host Nevada fourth (900, +36), New Mexico State fifth (911, +47), Boise State sixth (916, +52) and Hawaii finished seventh (940, +76).

Also announced today were the all-WAC teams and top awards.

San Jose State junior Erica Moston of Belmont, Calif., was voted the WAC's Player of the Year by the seven head coaches for the second consecutive season. Freshman of the year honors went to Idaho's Mortellaro and Coach of the Year honors went to San Jose State's John Dormann.
