Hawai`i Men, Fresno State Women Capture Tournament Titles

Honolulu, Hawaii - Third-seeded Hawai`i earned its second-consecutive tournament crown after a 4-2 victory over No. 1 seed Boise State, Sunday. 
On the women's side, Top-seeded Fresno State defeated No. 2-seed Boise State, 4-3, in a match that came down to the last point. The Bulldogs captured their eighth-straight WAC Championship crown after Laura Pola took down BSU's Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, at the No. 5 position.

Thursday night's championship banquet marked the announcement of the All-WAC teams. Boise State's Clancy Shields picked up Player of the Year honors for the men, but it was Melanie Gloria of Fresno State who collected her fourth-straight WAC Player of the Year award. Men's Match 4 - (1) Boise State def. (5) New Mexico State, 4-1
The No. 1 seeded Broncos earned a quick 4-1 win over the Aggies on Saturday at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex to advance to the WAC finals slated for 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. In singles play, NMSU’s McKinney was able to tie up the team score with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Blane Shields in the No. 6 match. The Broncos responded with three straight wins, however, earning the 4-1 win over the Aggies. Boise  State freshman Cristian Hodel was the first Bronco to win at singles, defeating Surreaux, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. No. 26-ranked Clancy Shields was just behind, downing Roman Stoisavljevic, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 match. BSU will now play Hawai`i in the championship match for the tournament title.

The No. 16th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs earned their eighth-straight WAC Tournament title after Laura Pola defeated Boise State's Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 5 singles spot in what turned out to be the final match of the tournament. Pola fought back from being down two games in the final set as Wlodarczyk had match point three times. Pola, a freshman, was named to the all-tournament team, along with senior Melanie Gloria and juniors Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova. Boise State's Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale were also named to the all-tournament team. No. 80 Thongdach earned an upset victory over the WAC Player of the Year and No. 16th-ranked Gloria in the No. 1 position, 6-1, 7-5.

In an epic four hour marathon match, No. 68th-ranked Hawai`i outlasted No. 41 Fresno State to earn a trip to the title match. The second-seeded Bulldogs won a decisive doubles point at the No. 3 spot in a point that took an hour and a half to win. The Rainbow Warriors got wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles spots. It was second-team All-WAC performer, Sascha Heinemann, who played for the clinching point in the No. 4 position over Bulldog freshman Remi Boutillier. Heinemann won the point in a come-from-behind, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, victory.

Men's Match 6 - (3) Hawai`i def. (1) Boise State, 4-2
The No. 68th-ranked Rainbow Warriors upset No. 20th-ranked Boise State in the championship match of the conference championship. The win marked the second tournament title in as many years for UH. Hawai`i defeated the top-seeded Broncos in the semifinal round in the 2008 WAC Championship. Freshman Leo Rosenberg upset WAC Freshman of the Year winner, No. 85 James Meredith, in the No. 3 position, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, to clinch the conference tournament title for the hosts. In the No. 5 position, Hawai`i's Jeff Fitch capped off an undefeated (3-0 in singles) tournament by beating the Broncos' Stanley Sarapanich, 6-4, 7-5. The Rainbow Warriors earned a crucial doubles point after Sascha Heinemann and Craig Faulk teamed up to take down Blane Shields and Matt Soloman in an 8-6 thriller, in the No. 3 spot. No. 74 Kean Feeder came back to defeat No. 60 Dennis Lajola, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the top position. Both teams will now look toward the first round of the NCAA Championships on May 8.
