DENVER ? Hawai`i's Annett Wichmann and Utah State's John Strang lead in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, after the first day of competition at the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship presented by Springhill Suites.
Wichmann took over first place in the overall standings by winning the shot put by a six-foot margin. Her teammate, Emily Sheppard, took top honors in the high jump and the 200m. Idaho's Darcy Collins sits in third place after she finished with two top three finishes, in the high jump and the 100m hurdles. Wichmann and Collins finished in 1-2, respectively, in the even at the 2008 WAC Championship.
For the men, Strang jumped out to nearly a 300 point lead after he had first-place finishes in the 100m and the high jump as well as a second-place finish in the 400m. Matt Bushnell of Fresno State sits in second place after garnering top honors in the 400m and second-place finishes in the long jump and shot put. Strang is two-time defending WAC champion in the decathlon.
