Utah State's Strang, Hawai`i's Wichmann Crowned Decathlon and Heptathlon Winners

LOGAN, UTAH ? Utah State's John Strang and Hawai`i's Annett Wichmann repeated as decathlon and heptathlon champions, respectively, during the second day of competition at the 2009 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship presented by Springhill Suites.

With the win, Strang collected his third-straight decathlon title becoming the WAC's first three-time champion in the event since Tito Steiner of BYU in 1977-79. Since joining the WAC in 2005, Utah State has won the decathlon every year since. Strang's teammate Jon Goble, who competed in his first-ever collegiate decathlon event, finished in fourth place after four top-three finishes, including top honors in the discus.

Fresno State sits atop the overall team standings as two athletes landed in the top three in the event. With 6,448 points, Evan Young earned a third-place finish that was highlighted by a first-place finish in the shot put. Young's toss of 42-00.75 (12.82m) bested the field of 10 competitors. Fellow Bulldog, Matt Bushnell, outlasted Young by 101 points to garner second-place honors. Bushnell finished in the top three in five of the ten events, including a first-place finish in the 400m with a time of 48.93.

Wichmann won her fourth-consecutive heptathlon title. The senior padded her first day lead by out-throwing the competition by more than 30 feet in the javelin. Overall, she finished in first place in three of the seven events as well as earning top three finishes in three other events. Wichmann now stands as the WAC's first four-time champion in the event.

Emily Sheppard earned six points for the Rainbow Wahine with her third-place finish in the event. Sheppard took top honors in the high jump and the 200m run. Idaho's Darcy Collins finished with 4,886 points, earning a second-place finish in the event. Collins finished in the top three in four of the seven events to earn eight points for the Vandals.

Competition resumes on Friday afternoon, beginning with the men's hammer throw at 12:30 p.m. MT. The finals of the men's and women's steeplechase get underway at 2:00 p.m. MT.
