Kayla Mortellaro, who will be a sophomore at the University of Idaho this fall, advanced to the sectionals of the U.S. Women’s Open qualifying after tying for first at a regional competition.

Mortellaro fired a regional qualifying 70 at Amelia National Golf and Country Club at Fernandina Beach, Fla., to earn her position in the June 15 sectional at Woodmont Country Club at Rockville, Md.

To be eligible to attempt to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open, a player must have a handicap of 4.4 or better. The 2009 Open is at Saucon Valley Country Club at Bethlehem, Pa., July 6-12.

Mortellaro just completed her freshman season at Idaho and was ranked 48th by GolfStat.com. She was the Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week twice and Golfer of the Month once. She wrapped up her freshman campaign with a 27th at the NCAA Central Regional last month.
