TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Boise State Broncos (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Boise State completed the opening weekend of the season with 1-1 record losing at Seattle 1-0 Friday night then rebounding to down Portland State 3-1 on Sunday ... this weekend the Broncos continue their four-game road tour to open the season when they travel to the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. ... the team will take on Rider University on Friday followed by the host Naval academy on Sunday ... three Broncos recorded goals last weekend to lead Boise State in scoring, Cheyenne Jones, Chelsea Robinson, and Maureen Fitzgerald.


Fresno State Bulldogs (0-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs opened the season on the road for the second year in a row ... the ‘Dogs lost to San Diego State, 1-0, and to Long Beach State, 2-0 ... Kaitlyn Revel recorded 11 saves and freshman Callie Hancock leads the team with three shots ... the Bulldogs face Oregon on Aug. 30 in their home opener.

Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (0-1-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 0-1-1 to open the season this past week ... the team tied Brigham Young 0-0 in double overtime before taking a 6-2 loss against Stanford ...  the freshman duo of Kristina Ehrett and Kanani Taaca shared time in the goal, recording five and two saves, respectively, to keep No. 25 BYU off the board ... UH got its first two goals of the season from Rachel Domingo and Britta Bourne, while Skye Shimabukuro and Ambree Ako each had an assist in the loss to No. 2-ranked Stanford ...  Bourne also led UH with three shots while both Kristina Ehrett and Kanani Taaca both posted four saves with three goals against ... this week, UH hosts Hawai‘i Pacific on Sunday at 5 p.m. HT

Idaho Vandals (0-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
After giving up three first-half goals to #21 Washington State on Friday, the Idaho defense clamped down and held the Cougars scoreless for a 0-0 tie in the second half ... Idaho sophomore goalkeeper Liz Boyden shined in the second half against WSU, as she held the Cougars out of the goal and tallied five second-half saves, including stopping a penalty kick ... Idaho’s 1-0 loss at Seattle was a case of what could have been, as Idaho had one goal nullified by penalty and weren’t able to convert a first-half penalty kick.
 
LA Tech Lady Techsters (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
LA Tech’s season opening win was its first at the brand new Lady Techster Soccer Field … the win marked the first time in the program’s short history that the Lady Techsters have opened the season with a victory at home ... it also marked the first time Tech won a match in overtime … Captain Kiva Gresham contributed a goal and an assist in the win for a career-high three points … the Lady Techsters welcome Grambling State to Ruston Friday at 5 p.m.


Nevada Wolf Pack (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Three newcomers made their first career start for Nevada, Kesia Broome, Lauren Braman and Rice while sophomore Sarah Voss also made her first career start … Dana Moreno, Jillian Masciola and Jordan Ramsier also made their collegiate debuts for Nevada during the match … Nevada will host UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine this weekend.


New Mexico State Aggies (0-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
As a first-year program, the New Mexico State soccer team has established a trend of playing in overtime matches ... the Aggies fell to Idaho State, 2-1, in double overtime in their home opener, Sunday, Aug. 23, at Aggie Memorial Stadium ... freshman forward Crystal Burns scored the Aggies first-ever goal ... senior goalkeeper Katie Graul posted 14 saves against the Bengals ... in the program opener, regulation wasn’t enough either. After a hard-fought 90 minutes, the Aggies lost in overtime at UTEP, 1-0, Friday, Aug. 21, at University Field in El Paso, Texas. Graul led the way for NM State with six saves.

San Jose State Spartans
(0-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
San Jose State dropped its 2009 season opener to No. 22 South Bay foe Santa Clara on Friday night in its first match on the brand-new FieldTurf inside Spartan Stadium ... the Spartans next host San Diego State on Friday, Aug. 28, before embarking on a season-long four-game road swing ... SJSU is 1-4 all-time against SDSU, including 1-2 as fellow WAC members from 1996-98, and an even 1-1 in San Jose ... senior striker Emmy Belding started her 21st straight match as a Spartan against Santa Clara, and was credited with her team’s lone shot on the night ... six Spartans made their major college debuts against the Spartans, including true freshman Kelsey Lord.

Utah State State Aggies (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State opened the season with a 2-0 shutout against 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Northern Arizona ... Summer Tillotson and Chantel Flanary each recorded a goal for the Aggies ... Tillotson was honored with the WAC’s Defensive Player of the Week award after helping the Aggie defense to the shutout ... this week, Utah State heads to the Lone Star State to take part in the 12th-annual Miner Classic, hosted by UTEP ... the Aggies will face Texas Tech on Friday, Aug. 28 and Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. Aug. 30 ... this will be the first meeting between the Aggies and both squads ... USU has now won 97 matches as a team and are three short of 100 program wins.


WAC NOTES

WEEK ONE HIGHLIGHTS
The WAC picked up three wins in its opening week of play. Utah State defeated 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Northern Arizona 2-0 at home. Louisiana Tech picked up its first-ever overtime win, defeating Lamar 3-2 in double overtime. It also marked the first season-opening home win in the team’s history. Boise State split a pair of games on the road, defeating Portland State 3-1 for the Broncos’ first road win of the year. First-year program New Mexico State dropped a pair of heartbreakers, falling 1-0 in overtime at UTEP before taking a 2-1 double overtime loss at home against Idaho State. Scoring NM State’s first-ever goal in team history was freshman forward Crystal Burns. Hawai‘i opened the season with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Brigham Young. There were a total of four overtime matches in the opening week of play.

LOUISIANA TECH’S LUKASEWICH NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Louisiana Tech’s Olivia Lukasewich has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 17-23.

Lukasewich, a sophomore from Woodbridge, Ontario (St. Jean de Brebeuf HS), scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give Louisiana Tech a 3-2 season-opening victory against Lamar. Lukasewich put the shot in the back of the net in the 106th minute from 15 feet out. She also finished the game with a team-high four shots, including one on goal. The win marks the first time in the program’s history that the Lady Techsters have opened the season with a victory at home. It is also the first time that Louisiana Tech has won a match in overtime.

Other offensive nominees included: Boise State junior midfielder Cheyenne Jones; Fresno State freshman forward Callie Hancock; Hawai‘i senior forward Britta Bourne; Nevada freshman midfielder/forward Emma Rice; New Mexico State freshman forward Crystal Burns; and Utah State sophomore forward Shantel Flanary.

UTAH STATE’S TILLOTSON NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Utah State’s Summer Tillotson has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 17-23.

Tillotson, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah (Alta HS), anchored Utah State’s defense to a 2-0 shutout victory over 2008 NCAA Tournament participant Northern Arizona. Tillotson played all 90 minutes in the backfield for Utah State, which held NAU to just five shots. The sophomore also added the game-winning goal for the Aggies, placing a penalty kick in the net during the first half.

Other defensive nominees included: Boise State sophomore goalkeeper Liz Ruiz; Fresno State junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel; Hawai‘i freshman goalkeeper Kristina Ehrett; and New Mexico State senior goalkeeper Katie Graul.
