Boise State Broncos (2-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Last weekend Boise State completed a four-game road tour to open the season going 2-2-0 overall ... the Broncos traveled to Annapolis, Md., where they participated in the Navy Invitational ... on Friday Boise State won for the first time in five tries east of the Mississippi River defeating Rider University 3-1 ... this week BSU returns home to host the first of three tournaments over the next three weeks beginning with the 2009 Governor’s Cup where they will play Montana and instate rival Idaho State ... BSU’s offensive attack has recorded seven goals and seven assists ... to date, six different individuals have scored a goal and seven have recorded an assist.
Fresno State Bulldogs (0-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The Bulldogs played their first game of the 2000 season at home against Oregon, falling, 2-0 to the Ducks ... Bradlee DeShane led the team with two shots on goal in the match ... freshman Callie Hancock leads the team with four shots on the season ... junior Kaitlyn Revel had 11 saves against the Ducks ... Revel has 22 on the season and 206 career saves ... she is in third place in career saves in Fresno State history ... Fresno State heads south next weekend for the UC Irvine Tournament Sept. 4-6.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (1-1-1, 0-0-0 WAC)
Hawai‘i went 1-0-0 last week, defeating Hawai‘i Pacific 4-1 in front of 1,067 fans at the Outrigger Hotels “Hawai‘i College Soccer Showcase” last week ... Britta Bourne led the Rainbow Wahine with two goals, while Chelsea Deptula and Vanessa Bailey scored one each ... Rachel Domingo, Brittani Lum and Mari Punzal were each credited with assists ... Kristina Ehrett registered 45 minutes in goal without giving up a score ... Ehrett was credited with the win in goal for UH ... this week, Hawai‘i hosts the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic where the team will face UAB and Pacific.
Idaho Vandals (1-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Idaho notched a win in its home opener, as the Vandals took down Utah Valley by a 3-1 margin … Idaho didn’t score its first first-half goal until the 19th game of the season, but it scored twice in the first 19 minutes on Sunday … Idaho’s three goals are the most the team has scored in the Pete Showler era and the most the team has scored in a home opener since a 4-2 win over Montana in 2003 … senior Ashley Perez scored her second career goal and first career game-winner on Sunday … freshman Chelsea Small notched her first career goal, while senior Sari Morrison scored her second career goal.
LA Tech Lady Techsters (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
LA Tech defeated Arkansas State 1-0 on Sunday in Jonesboro, Ark. behind a goal in the 87th-minute by Olivia Lukasewich … the goal was her second of the season, and it was her second game-winning goal of the year as she scored the golden goal in double overtime of Tech’s season-opening win over Lamar on Aug. 21 … Cat Buchanan earned her first shutout of the season in the win … true freshman Kacee Voldness and sophomore Chelsea White have played every minute thus far for the Techsters … Lukasewich leads the squad with her two goals, while captain Kiva Gresham ranks first in assists with two … Tech will welcome Prairie View A&M to Ruston on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest before the team heads to Nicholls State on Friday.
Nevada Wolf Pack (0-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Nevada fell in both of its matches this weekend at home versus UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine … both teams were ranked in the top-10 in the West Region by West Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America … sophomore Joanne Terranova made her first career start against UC Santa Barbara while junior Alyx Sacks made her first career start against UC Irinve … Nevada took a season-high six shots against UC Santa Barbara … Nevada will play Oregon State and Portland State on the road this weekend.
New Mexico State Aggies (0-3-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
The New Mexico State soccer team had another stellar defense performance but it wasn’t enough as the Aggies fell at North Texas, 1-0, Sunday in Denton, Texas, which was the first match of the season that didn’t end in overtime ... senior goalkeeper Katie Graul recorded a match-high eight saves in 90 minutes of action ... the lone North Texas goal of the match was only the second score the Aggies have allowed in regulation this year ... offensively, freshman forward Crystal Burns and junior midfielder Baili Foutz directed the Aggies with two shots each ... the NM State offense continued to improve and as a team, the Aggies had a season-high seven shots on goal at North Texas.
San Jose State Spartans (0-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Coming off a second successive shutout loss at home to begin the 2009 season, against San Diego State last Friday night, 1-0, the Spartans embark on a season-long four-game road stretch, beginning with the University of San Francisco odwalla Nike Classic this weekend ... San Jose State will take on Fairfield (Conn.) and Long Island (N.Y.), both for the first time in program history, at the USF tournament ... each of the Spartans’ opponents during their upcoming four-game stretch are East Coast schools ... San Jose State’s two home dates thus far in 2009 have attracted an announced crowd of 1,935 spectators.
Utah State State Aggies (3-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC)
Utah State went 2-0-0 last week with wins over Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin to claim the tournament title at the Miner Classic in El Paso, Texas ... the win over Texas Tech marks the first-ever win over a team from the Big 12 Conference for the Aggies ... the pair of wins ups USU’s record to a perfect 3-0-0--the best start to a season for the Aggies in its team’s history ... Lauren Hansen helped secure both wins last week as she scored three goals, including the game winner against Stephen F. Austin ... she earned WAC Player of the Week honors for her efforts ... USU plays host to Oklahoma State and Wyoming this week in Logan.
WAC NOTES
UTAH STATE’S HANSEN NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Utah State’s Lauren Hansen has been named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 24-30.
Hansen, a junior from Camano Island, Wash. (Stanwood HS), scored three goals in two matches as Utah State went 2-0 last week to win the Miner Classic title in El Paso, Texas. Hansen scored the game-winning goal in USU’s 3-2 win over Stephen F. Austin. In Utah State’s 3-2 win over Texas Tech, Hansen scored the first two Aggie goals as USU won its first-ever match against a Big 12 opponent. Utah State’s 3-0 record marks the team’s best start in program history.
Other offensive nominees included: Boise State senior midfielder Kaylea Perenon; Fresno State junior midfielder Bradlee DeShane; Hawai‘i senior forward Britta Bourne; Idaho junior forward Jenn Hull; and Louisiana Tech sophomore forward Olivia Lukasewich.
LOUISIANA TECH’S BUCHANAN NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Louisiana Tech’s Cat Buchanan has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 24-30.
Buchanan, a sophomore from Shawnee, Kansas (Shawnee Mission NW HS), led Louisiana Tech to a 1-0 road shutout against Arkansas State. Buchanan faced 10 shots, including four on net, and did not allow a single goal en route to her first shutout of the season.
Other defensive nominees included: Boise State senior goalkeeper Jen Burns; Fresno State sophomore defender Danielle Solich; Hawai‘i junior defender Chelsea Deptula; Idaho senior goalkeeper Anna Sandman; New Mexico State senior goalkeeper Katie Graul; and Utah State freshman defender Natalie Norrs.
WEEK TWO HIGHLIGHTS
The WAC picked up six wins during the second week of competition, doubling its win total from the first week of play. Utah State went 2-0 with its first-ever win over an opponent from the Big 12 Conference in Texas Tech. The Aggies defeated Texas Tech 3-2 before defeating Stephen F. Austin 3-2 to claim the tournament title at the Miner Classic in El Paso, Texas. Louisiana Tech improved to 2-0 on the season after a 1-0 road victory over Arkansas State. The Lady Techster’s game against Grambling State on Friday was postponed due to poor weather, but will be made up on Sept. 15. Idaho snagged its first win over the season in its home opener, defeating Utah Valley 3-1. Hawai‘i also got its first win of the season with a 4-1 victory against Hawai‘i Pacific. Boise State split a pair of matches at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland, defeating Rider 3-1 before falling to tournament host Navy 3-0.
SOCCER FORMAT
The WAC will continue its regular-season play as a single round-robin format for a total of eight conference matches. The points system is as follows: each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie. The six teams with the most points at the end of the regular season will advance to the WAC Tournament which is being held Nov. 5-6 and 8 in Boise, Idaho.
